What recorder would you buy?

    Looking for an inexpensive ($200.00 or less) dvd recorder that can be hacked to back up my dvds with macrovision and also copy my hi8 tapes? Looked at the ILO at walmart (r05) but after reading all of the negative replies decided to keep looking.

     ... A lot of people like the ilo r04 ... Personally, I think that all DVD recorders have some flaw or another ... I bought a LiteOn LVW-5005 nearly a year ago and liked it so much that recently I bought another ... You can find them on-line for under $130 ...

    catfreak,-- advise and sites are very good.

    I have the ilo DVDRHD04. I do what you propose. The unit works very well.
    For your purpose get a LiteOn or ilo [04], made by LiteOn. ilo is walMart and is discontinued for the 05. Its Cyberhome [No Hack]. I understand that LiteOn is re-baging the ilo 04 with 80gb HDD as the
    LVW 5005X with AllRight[- 0r +] . The HDD model of the o4 has better editing. I don't know about the LiteOn models. Check on advantages and price.

    Is the macrovision hack available for the liteon lvw-5005?

     One note though .. I haven't applied any hacks to either of my LVW-5005s because I'm afraid that it may void my one-year warranty on either of them

     What I do to defeat Macrovision is .. I start the recorder and let it record for about 10 seconds .. then I start either the DVD or VHS ... VOILA ! That evil Macrovisopn has been defeated !  So far, this method has worked 100% of the time with both of my recorders

    I found a 5005 at amazon for about $130.00, I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on one. Just want to make sure there isn't a better option out there first. Thanks for the help guys!
