I've been encoding my various digital camera's standard definition videos to H263 (DIXV/XVID) for years for use on my DIVX DVD players... but I've never really been happy with H263 but everyone I knows has these players so I stuck with it.

So looking ahead to finally getting a Blu-Ray player... what video format should I start encoding to now? I'm shooting standard definition video now but may move up to 720p now that my collection of SD cards is getting big enough to handle all the video I shoot on trips.

I prefer working with data files so I can also play them on my PC. I'd prefer NOT to author a disk. I hear mp4 isn't widely supported. What about AVCHD? Can I encode standard definition video to AVCHD? Can I just encode files to AVCHD and see a list of files?

    Thanks!

I should add that the video tools I now have are Nero 8, TMPGENC, Xilosoft Ultimate... plus just about every free encoder I could find.
