I'm a big fan of the KVCD format ( let the flamming begin). If your player supports that, AutoGK combined w/ DIKO will give you a completly free DVD to KVCD solution.

VCDs (MPEG1) and SVCDs (MPEG2) use standard 700MB CD-ROMs, and will playback in any DVD player.
They will also play in a PC with just a CD and no DVD (bonus).
DivX or XviD AVIs (MPEG4) offer the best quality in the smallest package ie. 2 hour film on one 700MB CD, but their playback is not so universal in any DVD player. They're for computer, WMP no problem, also good for serving up on LAN.
So where do you want to playback?

Get the brand name & model # from your DVD player, & check it on here:

If your model plays vcd/svcd, you can try a kvcd. If it doesn't, I wouldn't bother. Good Luck!
