For maximum quality that is. I have a monitor with 2 sockets on it, the DVI that I use for PC to Monitor, and an unused blue VGA DSUB socket. I have regular old composite cables for the ps2, and official component cables (red blue green and an extra red and white) for the wii, though I have it's normal composite cables as well. I'd like to connect them to the DSUB slot on my monitor and be able to use it as a sort of tv. At the very least, I can keep the wii hooked up to my 720p tv, but I'd really like to play the ps2 on my monitor. How would the quality compare next to just hooking it up normally to a tv? Will my monitor's native res. of 1680x1050 modify the image and change the AR ruining it, or will black bars be introduced to fix it? Any links to good products are appreciated. Thanks a lot.
Essentially, your monitor or TV are upscaling the image to their native resolution, which means the picture will lose some of its crispness, but this is only usually a problem on a big screen, e.g. 24" plus. Since you have a 20 or 22" monitor, judging from that resolution, the picture will still look alright when you're close up. Use component for the Wii, it's far superior to Composite, and buy one of these to hook it up: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-VGA-Male-to...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 For the PS2, this should work: http://cgi.ebay.com/VGA-TV-S-Video-...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50 Bear in mind obviously VGA can't carry audio and your monitor may not have speakers so you will still have to hook the red & white connectors up to your sound system as before.
Cool, so it'll work with just wires, no special converter box? It won't mess up the aspect ratio right? And my monitor does have speakers, but it's one of those headphone style holes, so I wouldn't be able to plug in the component audio cables...is there some sort of connector for those so that I can hook up my headphones? And what do I do for audio on the ps2 with it's composite?
Should work, the aspect ratio will be slightly stretched, but it shouldn't be too bad. Have a look at this: http://cgi.ebay.com/SPLITTER-Stacka...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:50 This allows the inputs from both consoles to be hooked up at once. Then all you need is one of these: http://cgi.ebay.com/3-5mm-3-5-Jack-...5|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318|301:1|293:1|294:50
Slightly stretched? About those links, having both plugged in isn't a worry for me, I can hook them both up individually as I need them, but that second one seems to be what I need for the wii's sound, what about sound for the ps2? About the second one for the wii, I have something like that already, and I just tested it out, seems to work fine, so basically all I need is to get sound to work for the ps2 and I'm golden. Can I take the white and red from the ps2, and hook it up to something like that link, and only use the yellow for the VGA connector? Also, have you tried any of this out? Maybe I can set the settings in the consoles to avoid the aspect ratio being messed up? Maybe there's some sort of converter box that has all these functions, no?
I was asking on another forum, and I'm told that those cables won't work, and I'll need a transcoder... Any input?
That cable will do exactly the same job for either console. I can't comment on how well it'll work or not as I've not tried it myself, but I don't really see why it shouldn't work.
Well I got the composite wire, and it didn't work, just like the other guy said. Looks like I'll need a transcoder or something.
