You are missing the point as are a lot of others. If GTA graphics were not as good you would still play the game b.c it has a fun factor. Graphics are great now, today. But what about those same graphics on GTA SA 10 years from now. You would be looking on the graphics then much as we do on Zelda for the SNES but yet people still go back to play Zelda on the SNES as will people play GTA SA years from now. The point is that when you suddenly have that urge to play the game years from now when the Xbox, ps2 are collecting dust in our houses you will not say,"Oh man i was thinking about how great the graphics still are on GTA SA and i wish to see them so i will play it now." In your mind you would be thinking man these graphics are stone age, prehistoric, how i have thought these graphics were tight back then??? but you will still say this game is still fun as hell and that is gameplay. Gameplay alone. Graphics add to the game as well does good music but you dont pick up a game on the shelves b.c it has great graphics. You pick it up b.c of its funfactor, replay value, and that is gameplay. You are not picking up the game of the store shelves to put it into your ps2 and then sit the controller down on the table in front of you, kick your feet up and sit back and watch it. You pick it b.c it is what you want to play or interact with its gameplay that might just happen to have great graphics and killer sound but when it is all done and said you would have bought that same game had the graphics been toned down bit. If you take away the gameplay no one would buy it. Not just to look at and say man look at these nice crisp graphics. I used Zelda as an example. People still play it on SNES as of today. It is not b.c of graphics is it??? Answer the question to as why people still choose to play an older game like Zelda and dont say things like, "Man i am not going to play that old game anymore b.c the graphics are not up to par with todays standards. You see wheer i am coming from??? Graphics will not be good and 10 years from now you will not put GTA san andreas in your xbox, ps2, PC to see the graphics. Will you, No. You will still play it b.c of the gameplay not graphics. Dont get me wrong i love breath taking graphics but they get old quick but the gameplay will last for years, maybe decades. Will those graphics on any game as of today last for the next 10 years like the gameplay?????? I am one of those people that but games only after i have read a review and tried the game out first. Most people look for the funfactor as the deciding factor when they look in gamepro, EGM magazines to decide whether they will buy the game. I have seen games have near perfect scores in graphics and weak ratings in funfactor and replay value and none of those games sold very well. Then when you ask someone about how it is they say man the graphics are killer but the game is boring as hell. Graphics 30% Gameplay 70%
hmm some very interesting points there. interesting indeed. currently i play on BF2 the most and its gameplay is FKING AWSOME, its a fabulous game and it makes you want to come back for more and more, u just wanna get that extra promotion for that extra weapon etc. which also makes you want to play the game.its graphics are also apsolutely amasing (i can play all settings on full at 60FPS on average, good eh, to say its a VERy demanding game hardware wise). Obviously after time the grphics will be crap compared to the latest games, but so will the gameplay. people still like the old games for their, simplicity, origionality and appeal and type of play. not for their superior gameplay, i like them 2 they are fun to play. but in My opinion BF2 and halo 2 (multiplayer) are kick ass and the graphics are great on both and the gameplay is always changing, e.g., different types of battles always happen and the same fight NEVER HAPPENS THE EXACT SAME TWICE. different things, always changing, the intense action. truly amasing fun. thats what games are all about. and that just mentioned above is all gameplay. the graphics are (in a way) a booster to make the game look good, but great graphics are great to have and have the potential to make the game much better. if it really is the icing on the cake, this is one of those cakes with the tastiest BEST icing that everyone loves to eat first on its own cos its just too tasty, (lol). i like both to be good. a girld example is, when you first meet a girl, the first thing (usually) that decides if shes fit, and ok, or ugly, is how pretty they are, the same applies to graphics. over time when ur both much older, u cant leave her fr a newer, younger better, cos ur probably married, got kids, and shes all ur gonna get for that mo, if ur 40-60 years old ur never gonna get a 18 yr old again are ya. lol, apply that to games.
It is interesting that how this thread has evolved. I have been looking at the new consoles from the assumption that they will all have great graphics, I'm sure that the next gen consoles will achieve near photo realism. As a graphic designer I find graphics very interesting. A little history lesson though, the realist painting movement almost died when photography was introduced and artists began experimenting with the abstract. I wonder if the same will happen with gaming?
