I somehow got riddled with malware and viruses. It was particularly nasty so rather than try and clean it up I decided to just format my hard drive and reinstall Windows XP since it had been a long time since I had done that anyways. The procedure went without incident but when windows started up I would get a series of errors: First I'd get a "Data Execution Prevention" error message: "To help prevent your computer windows has closed Windows Explorer. Data Execution Prevention protects against viruses and malicious software. After closing that box a standard "Windows Explorer has encountered an error and must close... Send report / Don't send" would appear. Finally after clicking don't send one of three things would happen; 1.) Dr Watson Debugger error/crash dialogue box pops up. Clicking close reloads explorer.exe and everything appears to work fine after. 2.) semi frozen state.. nothing can be done until I endtask Dr Watson Debugger from the ctrl-alt-delete menu. There is two process for some reason. Ending one reloads explorer.exe and everything appears to be fine. 3.) Explorer.exe reloads and everything appears to be fine. I continued along with the process of updating Windows XP regardless of the errors. Sometime during a windows update my net started to die. I opened up the status of my connection and noticed none or very little packets were getting received but lots were being sent. when browsing webpages everything would load at a snails pace or just time out altogether. For some odd reason FireFox just loaded nothing at all?? no message or anything just blank white pages (bizarre). IE at least told me I wasn't connect to the internet anymore. I verified that the modem was not at fault by testing it on another PC. No problems. At this point I reformat again, this time using recovery console. Everything is going well until I get to the point where I need to download and install Service Pack 2 for Windows XP from windows update. After downloading and installing it I get stuck in a reboot loop that does not end. My PC just keeps trying to start windows over and over and restarts just as it seems it will load it. Now I do a Repair/reinstall using my windows XP CD and another bizarre thing happens; Sometime during the bootup, a weird movie clip I've never seen before of a windows XP logo I've never seen before played. And then I got a Blue Screen of Death. See below: BSOD: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. A process or thread crucial to system operation has unexpectedly exited or been terminated. If this is the fist time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode. Technical information: *** STOP: 0X000000F4 (0X00000003, 0X89170BE8, 0X89170D5C, 0x805B2BCA) Beginning dump of physical memory Dumping physical memory to disk: counted up from 0 to 100 then flashed a message I couldn’t read)" Sometimes I can get to windows and sometimes it BSOD on me. Either way it always spends what seems like too much time on the Windows XP logo with the words "Please wait..." If it makes it to windows now something called "JMInsIDE.exe" crashes. At this point I tried plugging my ethernet back into the PC (I had been using it to connect to the internet with another PC to help troubleshoot this) and when I did that the same BSOD immediately appeared and crashed my PC again... at this point I gave up. What does it all mean?? Is it my motherboard do you think?
Do you remember the name of the virus that was detected? The only place a virus could have potentially hid after a format would be the BIOS. I don't believe this to be very common/easily done though and would assume bad hardware before this. If you have more than one stick of RAM in your motherboard you can test them by booting off of one, and then just the other. "The process belongs to the software JMInsIDE.exe by unknown. Description: JMInsIDE.exe is located in a subfolder of C:\Windows. The file size on Windows XP is 36864 bytes. The program has a visible window. JMInsIDE.exe is a file without information about the maker of this file. The process starts when Windows starts (see Registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). It is not a Windows core file. Therefore the technical security rating is 36% dangerous. Important: Some malware camouflage themselves as JMInsIDE.exe, particularly if they are located in c:\windows or c:\windows\system32 folder. Thus check the JMInsIDE.exe process on your pc whether it is pest. We recommend Security Task Manager for verifying your computer's security. It is one of the Top Download Picks of 2005 of The Washington Post and PC World. "
