I have read lits of article on intel's new and upcoming cpus. I don't really need to upgrade I guess I'm just curios if I were to up grade should I go with the q6600 or wait for intel's upcoming cpus to be released. I don't ply shooters I pretty much stick with the console type games. This is what I have currently e6600 8800gts 320mb 2 gigs of ram Intel d975xbx2 board What do you guys think?
if you aren't playing alot of games on you computer there is no real reason to upgrade. you wont notice much of a difference between a e6600 and a q6600 in normal computer activity.
i play a lot of games just not the shoters wich are thoght to be the most hardware intensive on hardware.
most games are not optimized for use with a quad core. so you would get more performance out of a higher clocked dual core than a lower clocked quad. are you running you cpu at stock? because you could overclock it and get a nice performance boost. an e6600 can get up to 3.6 with good cooling. The graphics card is what has the biggest impact on most newer games. so if your trying to max out games then a new video card is what you'll need.
thanks. what could i over clock my cpu to with stock cooling? I have heard of a lot of people getting pretty high with just stock cooling. also would overclocking my video card make a big difference, again with stock cooling? or whould over clocking them both be to much with stock cooling? thanks i had heard that it was better to go dual core but its nice to get more advice
over clocking will help and improve game play. if you built the computer then you will be able to over clock the cpu in the bios by adjusting the fsb. im not sure how far you could go with stock cooling, but possibly 3ghz. to overclock your video card download ati tool. you can use that to adjust your the core and memory clock and to test stability. if you need help visit the overclocking thread for specific details on what you need to do.
thanks,i have heard of people getting over 3ghz with stock cooling but that seems far fetched to me. would over clocking my 8800 make much of a difference? I know its off topic but what do you gus think about waitinh for intels new nehalem cpu to come out and then waiting for the price to hit a reasonable point then upgrading. I am just trying to make sure i dont jump in to something too late thanks again
overclocking your 8800 wont be a huge improvement but it will be noticeable. and i would wait nehalem to upgrade. there will be a big improvement.
Don't replace your CPU, but get a better motherboard. Something like a GA-P35-DS3R. Then you can overclock that CPU to at least 3.2Ghz. That will be a bigger performance increase than upgrading to a Q6600. Also you might want to get a CPU cooler.
