when was the magic modchip released?

ive had my ps2 for years now and i got it chipped back in 2002 but i never asked the guy what chip i had. i called him back recently and wanted to know what kinda chip it was and he said he couldnt remember what chips he was using back then. so i took off the ps2 cover and saw that he wrote MAG 10/2/02 so im assuming that MAG stands for magic. so i wanted to know if anyone knows when the magic chips were released as i want to compare them to the date written on the ps2. i dont want to completely open the whole ps2 and match the chip with others on the net as i dont wanna mess around with it just in case i damage something inside.
