Hi, I'm a complete newbie, it's been 2 years since I've done buring of DVD's. I had a single layer drive then so I was very familiar with DVD shrink and had no problem.

Now, two years later, I have a double layer or dual layer disc. Samething correct? And I'm attempting to read up as quickly as possible to get update. Can you point me in the right direction?

What software should I be using for my drive? I have Nero 7 but that won't allow me to burn my DVD movies. I'm getting DVD protected etc.

Yes you are correct about the DL's (dual layers). To burn Dl's you need a drive that supports Dl (just to be clear).

    [bold]A few things to remeber:[/bold]

1- Install the latest firmware on your burner; as to avoid coasters.

2- Buy Verbatim DVD+R DL Media (optional but...)
DVD-R DL are still causing issues since they are pretty new and not all drives support them, even with the latest firmware.

3- Do not burn at MAX speed. Burn at 2.4x!

4- If you are going to burn a DL .ISO(.mds) burn with DVD Decrypter(if you have it :D) and/or Image Burn and load the .MDS not the .ISO
The .MDS has the Layer Break information, and should help creating a smooth DL burn.

5- Don't multitask durning the burn, ensuring a smooth burn.

6- Follow the rest of the usuall burning precautions...

What about Nero 7's protected DVD issue? How can I bypass this? Tell me more about this Layer Break Info, I read up on it in Google but there wasn't too much to go by.

Don't use Nero 7. Use programs like AnyDVD.

As for Layer Break Info See this for further reading
    http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=114512

Layer break is basically where the dvd is split between the two layers on the disk.

I tested AnyDVD, seems like a nice progy, but I did not see any options to shrink the DVD media if needed. Do you know of something similar to DVDShrink but w/ the latest DVD protection removal features?

No, not directly. You will need the latest AnyDVD, DVDFab Decrypter (not the same thing as DVD Decrypter), or Ripit4me to break modern protections. DVDShrink is really for compression. You can use AnyDVD with DVDShrink, lots of people do. If you're rather go the freeware route Ripit4me makes use of DVDShrink too. DVDFab Decrypter does not compress, but you would use DVDShrink in a separate step to do that. It's free too.

I don't back up either but AnyDVD combined with shrink or CloneDVD2 is apparently the easiest way to go.
