i live in a former ntl area in london, its now virgin

do i need an active cable connection to my house, or can i use the old connection that has been there for 5 years?

wich cable box is the most easy to use for a TOTAL NEWCOMER who has no prior knowledge of this and is NOT IT LITERATE

ultimately i want a trouble free box, which is easy to scan, and is easy to install updates, firmware, keys, cams, files, emu and all the rest.

i would prefer not to have to scan too often, but if i do, im hoping it will be easy to do.

i have heard a lot of rumours about many boxes not working, and red lines appearing and a high likelihood that the boxes will stop working soon.
so can someone tell me which boxes to avoid

Please stick to your original post as in the one you where conversing with Celt on. By that you said you had a Sat Box already.

    YES SCOUSER

its true i have a sat box its a dreambox 5620s. but its crap its doesnt get me any UK channels apart from the crap basic ones, that you get through normal tv anyway.

So unless someone can help me get sky channels or at least english speaking channels, then i see little point in using it, and had i known that the dreambox is a piece of crap i would never have bought it in the first place.

like i said im a total novice and its only by reading this forum that i realised that i should have gone for a cable tv option and had somebody been around to explain this to me in 2004 perhaps i wouldnt be in this position, sadly there arent people in london who are happy to inform you about alternative ways of getting cable tv.

that is why im still asking these basic questions, such as do i need a basic cable subscription, which you may have noticed that nobody has still bothered to repsond to yet. im still trying to inform myself about these cable related matters, unlike many other users i havent been doing this for years nor do i have knowledge of programming matters, but i refuse to pay extortionate cable subscription charges, or even worse rip-off sky charges, which im sure many users on here can sympathise with,

im willing to learn even if it takes me a while.

In fact im having problems trying to work out whether there are any londoners using this forum, that way i could firstly learn about what cable area im in and take it from there.

    thank you for listening

If you looked throughout the forum your queries have been answered numerous times. Basically all you need is the basic digital package from VM then get a box, flash it with the latest firmware and away you go.

There are quite a few members from London here so it is quite achievable. In my opinion you are suited to a Eurovox Max V, easy plug & play with nice interface and features. So when you have a basic cable digital package from VM, just come back I will tell you where to get the best deal and give you all the info you need to receive "all" channels.

ok thanks for your help there.
just maybe a few points that i am curious about and guess u may be able to answer.

ive heard talk of needing a splitter connected to the cable wall connection, heard it attaches to the wire.
do i need a cable splitter attached to the wall, and is it necessary to keep both ntl and eurovox attached at the same time, or can the ntl box retire.

    cheers

Sorry I have to leave but quickly you could put the N** box into retirement but use a splitter between the N** box and the Eurovox this will not only allow updates to the N** box but you can then use it in another room, why not your paying for it either way. Sorry have to fly, hope that answers your query.

almost Celtic but im a bit confused about something,

i live in london in a former mtl now vrgin cable area, yet i heard talk of mmds and dishes beng required for cable tv in ireland, surely this only applies to Ireland chaos cable and not London.

but if it does apply will it affect my use of the eurovox/dreambox (ie prevent me using the, for the purpose for which they were bought?)
