Which format has the best size/quality ratio?

    Basically, I've got some .mpg and .avi files that are taking up a lot of space on my HD. I was wondering if there is a format/codec/program that would allow me to store the movies in a smaller file, without losing (too much) detail. Is this possible, and what do I need to convert my files? FYI each movie clip is about 195mb.
