    Hi I have been recording dvds for three months and have used two brands: Memorex and Computer Essentials. One of the Memorex spindle had media code CMC MAG E01. Worked perfectly. The second Memorex spindle was media code Philips.co8. It sucked. Around 40/50 didnt work. Now i bought a 10pack Comp. Essentials with media code RITEK R03. Has worked great. My question now is: which media brand should i buy in order to work with my dvd drive and players. I dont want to buy more memorex since i dont know which media type im going to get. What should i buy? Thank you guys! Also i would like to ask: Is a 16x dvd+r compatible with my 2x drive?

    my drive is Sony dw-p50a(speed 2x) firmware 1.8f

    @plugo14 hi :)
    cmc mag.... oh dear! still you struck gold with the RITEKR03 +r 8x
    never use anything else personally (except the odd 50 or so of VERBATIM )
    you can see my thoughts on both in my sig
    if you want -r then RITEKG05 -r 8x is the answer

    in addition to the good fellows' replies there, a quick glance at my sig will give you decent and appalling media suggestions...plus i recognise your username so have probably helped sort out a Nero log for you recently, hence hopefully new media is all you're after to have successful and continued burning..

    Between the phillips/cmags/and the riteks,those r-3's should be the best media out of all three of those MID codes.

    I am unfamiliar with those brand names of media.I did see some computer essentials on sale somewhere while I scoured the weekly sales virtual ads.

    Because of unfamiliarity,those MID codes may change from batch to batch,just like those memosux. Cmags aren't very good,but there is a lot worse media out there.If you go to the 25/50/or 100 pack and the odds of crappier manufacturers will increase.

    You've got an older 2x drive. This newer ritek-R03 mid code is easily recognized by your firmware. Trying other 8x and 16x may not be so lucky.The cost of 16x media is usually a little higher.Some of those older drives haven't had firmware updates in ages.It's like the burner manufacturers want you to go out and purchase newer drives to be able to burn this faster media.

    I purchase the majority of my media at staples and Office depot. Office depot has their own brand name media on sale this week for 30 cents each.Their last sale was 25 cents each in a buy 1,get 2 free sale 3 or 4 weeks ago. These have been coding as Ritek-R03 in the 50 pack and 100 pack spindles.My last 2 batches coded as that and catfreak says all Office depot media is ritek.Only 1 coaster out of 300 OD ritek-r03 and it was a playback coaster!

    If the Ritek-R03 are performing great for you,stick with them.I love them,but when I can get fuji or sony tys for 30-40 cents each,I snatch them up instead.

    You can also find that Ritek-R03 code on Maxell +8x,made in taiwan.I've burned several hundred of these and all performed as well as my yudens.The japanese maxell +8x are Hitachi's and also very sweet.When on sale,these will go for 35-40 cents each.Check the labels for where they are made at on these maxells plus 8x and you are sure to get either hitachis or ritek. Not so lucky anymore with their dash 8x.

    I've always used Sony DVD-R 1x-8x and have never had a problem.

    www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia has a list of what media will play in what standalones.
