Hi guys, haven't seen a post like this in a very long time and i thought since the new PS3 Slim came out, it would be a great topic!

so the question is...who here thinks the PS3 Phat is the way to go and who thinks the Slim is the new way to go?

Now before everyone starts flaming here...lets looks at every model current and past!

Personally, im holding on to my Launch 20GB PS3 Phat (now upgraded to 120GB...lol...i know its not much). i prefer the look, options such as "install other OS", and PS2 BC!!!

what do you guys think? SLIM or PHAT?

There is more to it then just Slim or Phat because there are different Phats & at different prices

20gb/60gb Full PS2 BC Launch models with Linux etc.
80gb Almost Full PS2 BC early models with Linux etc.
40gb/80gb/160gb No PS2 BC with Linux etc.

    vs

120gb/250gb No PS2 BC, No Linux New Slims

In my opinion it would probably have to be when the 60gb Full PS2 BC with Linux had a price drop down to $499 OR the current 80gb No PS2 BC with Linux that has a current price of $299 (while supplies last).

But after going over what I just wrote then I have to say Phat overall is the clearly better choice (kinda like the PSP I feel).

Pros: PS3 Slim is a great choice if you plan on moving it, doesnt collect dust and fingerprints because of matte black material, Quieter fans

Cons: Some People Find It Ugly,Buttons For Eject/Power, No linux Support

    If I Didnt Already have a 60gb i would buy a slim

I was just about to post the same question up. i have several questions to ask.
    1) Will sony keep making the fat ps3 after the slim ps3 drops?
    2) Will the current fat ps3 price drop after the slim ps3 comes out?
    3) Whats the current cpu's used on the ps3? 45 or 65? any difference?
    4) Where should i go buy the current 80gb model with coupons for cheap =]? so far this is what i found

the same time they annouced the ps3 they also annouced an imediate price cut of $100 on all ps3, ps3 slim (120 gb) and phat (80 gb)are both $300, and the phat (160 gb) is now $400, i think at those prices, sony just slit nintendos throat, and i guess it might be considered a punch to the face for microsoft (lol)

A friend of mine who owns both the 60GB and the 1st gen 80GB told me the 60GB had a higher chance of getting the yellow line of death.

The 80GB wasn't plague with the same problems the 60GB have.

Any input on that? I was looking on ebay and craigslist for a used 60GB since I wanted the hardware BC.

At this rate I might as well just buy a regular non-BC PS3 and just keep my PS2 near by.

    Just to answer vvilliamm's questions

    1) I've heard that when all the phat ps3's are sold, that's it. Supposedly the PS3 Slim is gonna take over, but who knows for sure.
2)The current price for PS3's at game stores and whatnot are $299.
3)That phat uses the 60nm, and the slim has the 40nm

I wish I had a slim. Less power consumption. Less heat. I don't care to run Linux and I don't care about BWC. Of all my friends who whined about BWC, not one of them has used it at all.

....but.....I wouldn't trust the slim until it's been in circulation for a while. I don't trust Sony and their lasers. Maybe it's not even an issue, but I went through my fair share of PS2 laser issues. And when my buddy had to spend $150 to have his PS3 fixed because it wouldn't read discs, I decided not to put anything in my PS3 besides PS3 games and the occasional bluray (i mostly stream hd content). If I had to do it all over again at this moment, I would stay phat. Find the cheapest model I could and then spend a few bucks on a 320GB HDD. But who knows, the slim might turn out to be extremely reliable.

See I feel the same way! I don't really care much about Linux on the PS3, and mine isn't even BC, so I would be fine with the slim. Less power consumption is something nice, cause if you've ever heard the fan in the PS3 when it's getting hot, it's loud!

But... Since PS3 prices are dropping, and you can get a used 60GB for $329, I might just have to do that, cause the only game I would really play, would be Shadow of the Colossus.

PS3 slim has a smaller, cooler running, and slightly more powerful cell CPU.
The slim is also quieter, not as thick, and doesn't collect finger prints and dust as much.

But the older PS3 models have Linux support, and have those cool touch sensitive power and eject buttons.
Also some older models have the BC. But either way, I keep my PS2 right beside my PS3 anyways, so it really doesn't matter to me lol

Personally, I think Sony could have waited a couple of years to release the slim. If you compare the fat PS2 and the slim PS2, the slim is much shorter, much thinner, and not as wide.
The PS3 slim is shorter by an inch or two, and wider than the original. It's only thinner, which doesn't make a whole lot of a difference to most people.
