Ok heres the situation, Ive gota collection of dvd rips that are in .avi format and most of them are approx 700mb in size. I dont want to store these on my hdd so im goning to burn them all to DVD's. Now I have an xbox360 that will play these .avi files right off a dvd. Should I encode my .avi's to dvd with convertx or should i just burn the .avi files with imgburn and let the 360 read them how they are?

Very difficult to say which is "best" - it's up to you.
In terms of quality, the avi file may produce the best picture,
if the decoder in the 360 does a good job. Try it and see.

Ya I tried both methods with the same movie file and the results where about the same. When it comes down to it I think the best quality might be achieved by directly burning the .avi's to dvds and letting the 360 decode them but it is really hard to tell. Thanks for the reply:)

This is the point I was trying to make.
I have a DVD player that plays avi. Of the few that I've converted,
in terms of quality, the avi was always slightly better.
It's one generation newer than the mpeg re-encode, and the chip in the
player does a good job with it.

With your own observation of your own equipment, it seem as if
you're not 100% sure if one is better than the other. And that's
without considering any of the other points. So for somebody
else to make a recommendation - it's impossible.

Yea I hear what your sayin, but I have read that once you convert a .avi to dvd format you loose quality. So I figured it would probably be best to play the .avi right from my 360 hoping to preserve quality. I just wanted to make sure I was on the right track and I wasn't misunderstanding this whole thing.

As far as someone else making a recommendation the 360 is a pretty common piece of equipment so someone more experienced with the tech. of the 360 might know the answer to my question.

But thanks for the reply man, much obliged :)
