I have both tmpegnc and main concept and would like to know which would give a better quality encoding my videos in mpeg1,mpeg2,or dvd with good quality when i burn it to a disc?
I consider TMPGenc a very good encoder, which has the only drawback to be very slow, when it encodes multipass VBR (SVCD and DVD). Therefore, when it encodes VCDs or CBR DVDs it isn't even slow. More, for TMPHenc I suggest my 'elemantay streams' method http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/351013 , since TMPGenc automatically cteates a (M2V + 48 kHz WAV) ensemble. Later you'll encode WAV --> AC3 with FFMPEG GUI and you'll will author the DVD (M2V+AC3 ---> DVD stuff (authoring) --> DVD (burning)).
I have both as well and would have to give MainConcept the edge in quality but not by a whole lot; just enough to matter to me. The main thing I have noticed in TMPGEnc is a slight ghosting effect, easily fixed by filtering. I would forgo speed for quality but MC wins in that department, too. Easily twice as fast before any filters in TMPGEnc are added while using every setting in MC.
