The video playback (vcr?) contains too much jitter. Use a different capture driver version. Version 2.13 is pretty good but version 1.06 is the best. I never had version 1.06 generate the wide horizontal bar. If results are still bad, then try a different tape machine.

If you are Captureing from a Retail VHS Tape it could be Copy Protected..You Can get While Lines and distorted Images when your Tapes are coppy protected...

I've been having the exact same problem when trying to capture home video from my analog Cannon Hi8 Camcorder. The white horizontal band seems to cover exactly the middle portion of the captured video. However, the preview window always shows the recording correctly. It's only the captured clip that has the problem. The white band only appears sporadically and sometimes doesn't appear at all. My system is a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 with an nVidia GEForce 5900 and plenty of disk space. I'm capturing with the svideo cable connected to the VIVO port on the card. I'm using nVidia's latest WDM driver. I have the same problem with all capture programs that I've tried: VirtualVCR, Nero, Windows Movie Maker, etc.
Does anyone have any suggestions or insight into this problem?
Thanks in advance for any info.

Thanks for the suggestion but the latest version of the nVidia WDM driver that I could find was 1.22 and this driver still has the same problem. I've also tried uninstalling all drivers and capturing software and reinstalling and this still has no effect.

I finally got the white bar to go away. I uninstalled the nVidia WDM VIVO driver and my video drivers. Then I installed version 56.64 of nVidia's ForceWare drivers. Then I installed the WDM Capture driver that came with my Video Card. I'm using a XFX GEFORCE FX 5900. Apparently this card is somehow tied to the drivers that it shipped with. Once I had all the correct software installed, the white bar across the middle of the screen disappeared
