Maybe bacause your TV is 4:3 and when it displays a 16:9 video, it cuts off a part of the video.
If it is the case, you should 'tell' the hardsub's plugin to occupy only a part of the screen. I use VirualDub + its 'Subtitler' filter [+SSA converter to make SRT -> SSA, since Subtitler filter needs a SSA subtitle] + VirtualDub's frameserving to any encoder you like [File__Start Frameserver ---> save as subtitled_movie.vdr, you must have the VirtualDub's frameserving client installed, by clicking on AuxSetup.exe and on 'install handler'] (obviously, the Resizing must be done by VirtualDub's before loading the subtitler filter, or your AVI -> MPEG encoder will resize the subtitle, slso).
SSA Converter, by default, puts a fixed 20 pixels of distance from the left and the right borders.
