Why bother mounting a game image?

I normally burned my iso's to disc and then installed them, but I remember a couple times in the past I'd just crack 'em and install from the HD. Just did this today. Basically, just use winiso to extract the Iso contents, then just install the game.

If that works, and it seems too, why does everyone make a big deal out of the ease of mounting images (rather than burning them)?

Because burnign a correct copy means you dont need to resort to hacks and such because....
    (1) that's the entire point of burning backup in the first place.. to be able to use it like the original, (2) it takes absolutely no skill to download some hack somewhere and (3) the hacks usually limits you to a specific version and some obscure techiniques arer required to move from one version to the next.

    Huh?

I'm talking about, lets say you go on the net and download game iso A.

All you have to do is run winiso, extract the contents of "game iso a", and install it by double clicking setup.exe.

You do not have to burn or mount the ISO, as far as I can tell, and I was previously under the impression that you did.

What's the point of mounting then? The idea was to save you a burn, but I just found out you dont have to burn anyway. Extract Iso contents and install.

You got that right Praetor! The use of "no cd patches" is for nOObs, no SKILL needed to backup. I prefer to backup the "original" method as this takes much skill, knowledge of the "right" hardware& software. "No cd patches"= for pansies!!!

Anyone in their right mind would make a backup m8. If your pc craches= your screwed

Er, this method WON'T WORK for SecuROM 4.8.3&up and Safedisc 2.8-2.9 m8.

Indeed... in some cases though you can install the game but you will not be able to play it or even start the game.
