after reading one of the threads here about FTA and stuff I did some googling and found some "interesting" sites with people posting keys for pansats and stuff.

not sure as to whats actually legal or not... why do people need new pansat keys all the time? do they get hit or spiked by the satellite companies? k thanks in advance

The sat companies are constantly changing the encryption codes to keep people from stealing service. Therefore the people that are using different equipment to steal service must update keys and bin files to keep getting the FREE service. Its all a game between the sat companies and the FTA world. Its not just the Pansat receivers, its all of the different brands out there. The development of auto roll bin files helped to eliminate manual input of key numbers, but the sat companies have found a way to mess with those too. We are now starting into another DOWN period where many of the channels are going black again. It will take the code writers like Blacklist some time to correct the bin files and open those black channels back up again. Usually a few days to a week. It depends on how big a change the sat companies made to the encryption sequence. I hope this answered some of your question.

In all honesty its really not to much of a hassle. It actually quite fun, but the choice is yours. The keys are fairly simple to put in, and there is a bin that autorolls the key. Meaning it automaticcaly changes the key. granted new encryption comes out, but then a new bin comes out. fun stuff

okay, and what are the legal arguments here? there's nothing illegal about putting in a bin, and since you are not stealing someone else's signal then thats cool.

The bins ARE illegal because they modify the receivers to receive encrypted signal. Its the same story as the old cable decsramblers that were sold. Its theft of signal anyway you look at it and it would hold up in court. Lets not kid ourselves by saying the bin isn't illegal. Will you get caught, I kind of doubt it since there is no connection that can be traced by the outside world. Someone would have to turn you in. Just my outlook on it.

yeh, but if i went back to plan 1 and put it in my dormroom in college that increases my chances say if someone got a grudge on me

but hey if its automatic and i never said anything, it looks like a legit signal right

the thing is, unless you have 500 customers that you hook up with the bins, they aren't really going to come after 1 guy just watching TV. if you're selling the receivers off the back of a truck in the parking lot, well then yeah maybe. I have yet to see DN people cruising neighborhoods checking which houses have dishes against their customer lists. even if you did have it in your dorm, are your buddies going to ask to see your monthy statement from DN or something? I dont even think placing a call to DN would do any good. the costs of going thru the motions to even come to your house would be far more than they are losing by 1 guy watching tv.

great way to [bold]rationalize[/bold] the situation, does this method work with older DirectTV boxes?

*goes to find the model #*

No, DTV boxes or channels can not be compromised. FTA receivers only work for DN or if in the north region they work on BEV. You can use a DTV dish with the FTA receivers.
