hello, can anybody tell me please why has backup (e drive suddenly appeared in my computer? i also have a problem with my cd-rw drive, it wont recognize blank disks. could these probs be linked? please help me, its baking my head!
You haven't put any information about your system, or anything else which might help determine what might have happened. What operating system are you using, what version is it at (service pack) XP has different characteristics to Vista. Have you installed any new applications recently? You need to describe a history leading up to the new drive appearing, it would also help if you listed the properties of the backup (does it have any data in it, size). How long have you been using the PC, have you updated it? Without some basic information you are unlikely to get an answer that will help without someone plucking a guess out of thin air and striking lucky.
I had a DVD-Ram drive in my HP pavilion that stoped acknologing CD-R's one day. It would play DVD's and actual CD's fine but wouldnt read or write blank or copied CD's. I googled the model number only to find a million threads of the same problem. The solution was to send it back and have it replaced with a different model. No mysterious drives or partitions appearing though, sorry.
hello bigdk, is this info any good? my computer is 5 years old its a packard bell acpi uniprocessor pc version: 5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158) root\acpi_hal\0000 hard drive: maxtor 4r080l0 version 5.1.2535.0 used space: 57.9 gb free space: 14.3 gb device instance id: ide\diskmaxtor_4r080l0_________________ramc1tu0\3252445348474543202020202020202020202020 backup (E : used space 2.91 gb free space 1.07 gb lots of folders + files i dont recognize dvd/cd-rom drives: h+h dvd-rom dvd-41sd scsi cdrom device toshiba dvd-rom sd-r5112 ive have downloaded a trial version of nero and uninstalled and re-installed roxio easy cd recently because my drive has stopped recognizing blank cds. i have tried updating my drives i think back up drive has appeared because i have so much stuff on pc? worried that it may be a virus though? could be time or a new pc. cheers jk
can you do a screen capture of the drive contents and post it here, easier than listing it. Roxio does make virtual drives, but these are virtual dvd drives, not backup, so I can't see its that, unless roxio has made a backup of you main system files whiilst it was installed. Use either printscreen to capture or use a secondary program like snagit (1 month free trial). Load picture on a host site such as photobucket (free account req'd) then use the html coding shown just above where you type your messages here. You will need to just copy the link of the stored photo, and paste it here, but then change the upper case IMG to lower case img, otherwise it won't work. Have you tried to do a delete of the drive? is it locked? You can download a free virus scanner, do a search for 'avg free'makes it easier to find the free version. You may also want to look for rootkits with RootkitRevealer. I doubt it is a virus, but worth doing anyway.

It looks like it could be a virtual drive, but it looks like it is a backup of something. It also looks like it was created with Nero.
im thinking of buying a memory stick, transfering all my important documents and programmes and doing a reset back to factory settings. do you think this is a good method of cleaning my pc?
It looks like a Packard Bell system backup. Yes you can delete it. As long as you have a Windows disk (bootable) or system recovery disk and have the drivers you'll be fine doing a clean install. If you visit the P.Bell website and check for drivers, you can download them and load onto a disk before rebuilding. Otherwise look at all the hardware and make a note of the make model numbers of parts and download from each manufacturer. Make sure you get: Chipset, LAN, Sound, Graphics etc... I've haven't used a system restore disk for about 10 years, so can't remember what the procedure is and how good it is for a clean install. If you have the licence key with the machine (you should have), then you could just download XP (same version as you have) and use your key. Downloading software can be illegal if you use licences you don’t own, but if you have and use your own key it is perfectly legal. If you find you downloaded the wrong version MS and your key won’t work, then just call Microsoft and they will give you new keys over the phone until one works. As long as you have a valid unique key, Microsoft will be happy and are very helpful, it’s the dodgy people trying to get free software they are out to stop.
