Im not a PS3 hater, just let me remind everyone...

We are way off from getting gigantic games more than the 8gb dvd at this point, so this whole excitment about blue-ray wont hit home for a few more years into the console's life cycle.

Development costs for games will also be higher when publishers start making games on the blu-ray since its still pretty new, (this translates into higher prices for games for us consumers, maybe up to even $70 per game).

Remember BetaMax??? It was FAR superior to VHS tapes, but it flopped. Sony developed BetaMax. Sony also developed the UMD format for the PSP. The UMD has also flopped. Many movie studios have stopped making UMD movies to extremely poor sales. Even Wal-mart has decided to stop selling them.

Blu-ray is superior to dvd, but just because its a bigger format that can hold hi-def movies doesnt mean its "better". dvd was a huge step forward from vhs in terms of: no rewinding, instant chapter selections, the video quality doesnt degrade over numerous viewings, sharper colors, higher resolution, etc. Same thing with cassete tapes to cd. blu-ray doesnt offer a big enough advantage over dvd to many consumers, especially with blu-ray dvds like Phantom of the Opera for $25. its $8 on dvd. see the difference? My point is: Is it worth the extra 10-15 dollars just to watch it in hi-def? Are movies even recorded in hi-def? Probably not.

I kind of agree in the fact that HD-DVD should do the trick for disc sizes this next generation. I have to say that we probably won't even go over 20GB.

How much space does it take up to put a game in 1080p compared to 1080i?

a bit more space most likely. imagine a bluray with all ff releases ever up to 10? or all the crash bandicoot games in one. thats a good place itt'l come in handy. plus with the extra space they can do lots of realtime cutscenes.

Ok but if it isn't much then why go for a more expensive player and disc?

On Wikipedia they say that HD-DVD can handle 1080p too so I think HD-DVD would have been plenty for THIS next generation. Now a couple generations down the road, I can see either Blu-Ray or an advancement leading the way.

"The HD DVD format supports a wide variety of resolutions, from low-resolution CIF and SDTV up to HDTV formats such as 720p, 1080i and 1080p"

If alot of space is made available.. it would most likely get used up. Back in PS1 days was games on DVDs... no. They were on cd's. Not until PS2 that they crossed over to DVDs, and even a buch of early PS2 games are on cds. And are there a significant size difference between cd's and DVD's?...hell yes. So i dont know why ppl are saying blue ray isnt necessary and it has a buch of "wasted space". Games are gonna continue to get bigger as graphics improve and games become more complicated with ai. No way is a game gonna get limited to 20 gb and not allow to get bigger. If thats the case then consoles with hd dvd wont last very long at all. Sony is just doing what they were always doing. They put games on DVDs which holds more space, other consoles put games on DVDs also. Except for this time they own blue ray and no one can copy them. If blue ray wasnt sony exclusive im sure 360 would of had it as well and no discussion or arguments would be made.

Yes, true. Games will eventually get too big for HD-DVD but not for a while. What about compression techniques?

But with all that extra disc space with Blu-Ray, couldn't they hike up the game play? Say if you had a 360 game and the same game on Ps3, could they make the Ps3 game better with that space like adding more to the level and making it look nicer by adding little details to the level?

yes. and they could add more unique foliage and oth meshes and models and textures with the extra space for them.

they alwas said "omg dvd is too much for games" and the cd died for ps2 mostly after what, about a year?

and compression techniques require decompression, which means more load times. 360 games are compressed alot, and have you seen the load times of games like madden 06 and oblivion? omg its like the dvd sometimes. i guess its also due to the slow ram and dvd drive for next gen size of data, allowing slow reads.

unless something changed, i was under the impression that there was not going to be ANY games released on HD-DVD. i thought M$ said the add on player was simply for "movies," and has nothing to do with gaming? has this changed???

funny, maybe for some people. i don't think M$ would do that, it would be a kick in the nuts if they did as they have repeatedly said it was going to be for movie viewing, and i really don't think the add on is going to sell much anyhow

Good point^^^^ but some games should learn to let it go or its like a bad horror series. Too many times theres and end all in games and then they decide they want to make another buck and keep the series going.

NOt to offend anyone but i beleive that everything with the ps3 is a bonus for you guys. I mean free online play is great and you can brag about that over MS but if it wasnt free and cost a shitload you all would still buy it, i mean games are going to be priced higher so if you figure it out and you pay a little extra on everything ps3 it cancels out free online play.5-10 bucks realistically higher than MS games,100-200 bucks more for the system,5-10 bucks more on accessories i.e controllers (u want high tech/bluetooth in gamin u will pay). All im saying is Ps3 fans dont get dissapointed they look at the bright side of EVERYTHING!$600 console...yeh that sounds great, potentially high priced games...yeh its worth the technology,blu-ray movies cost 40 F*CKING dollars each..meh they look amazing i'll pay for it,uh oh free online play WOO-HOOOOO MS doesnt have that we WIN!!!All the negatives are spun to be positve and talked about in tech mumbo jumbo even though its been said graphics will be nearly identical by all gaming entities outside of Sony, the space has been said to be extraneous by tech people. People say MS discs to small and cant fit enough content and games like Oblivion will have to be on 4 discs...oh how did that work out???barely used half of one standard dvd,the compression technology is getting better everyday and BD is jumping the gun. People pay for convenice, getting Adam sandler all on on BD disc you'll pay out the bum, dont think because its one disc you'll pay for only the one movie. Is it that hard to walk 4 feet and chage discs? Its like buying a cold 20oz bottle of coke for $1.29 when for 99 cents you can get a 2 liter bottle...screw conveniece i'll look like a bo-tard drinking my 2 liter bottle and saving some for later. My whole point is its all just a bonus,Sony has been raped by nearly everyone in the gaming community but yet their fans turn their heads and focus ONLY on the POSITIVES like free online play which last time Sony had that (ps2) it sucked anal liquids but theres excitement over it this time...WHY???Cheating was ALL Over the ps2,now i see it on the 360 too but its nowhere as bad as it was on the ps2, i could hardly finish a game of madden online once i cracked the top 50...dont have that on the box(360).AS you fellas say...you get what you pay for.see how that came full circle????

    P.S im a douschbag LOL

Yeah but dnglebry your forgetting one thing ps3 is a lot better then xbox360. It may cost a little extra money but still i would always pay a little extra for a game wich is better then buy a crummier version knowing that their is a better game out their. Also before that you said the graphics for the ps3 and xbox360 are going to be nearly identical i think the ps3 will have better graphics since it is a more expensive system but its also a better system. You cant really put a price on greatness. I could would buy a more better system even if it was more expensive.

You stated the ps3 was better which is a default answer for fans of any consoel and seeing how it isnt out we'll have to wait and see about that. What i stated about graphics was from game developers opionons and E3. What is it with the greateness? this isnt the holy grail...its getting even crazier as the launch gets closer cult cough cough cult...

A little try $100-200 thats not a little to most people, plus the potentially higher game and accessory prices. What i stated about graphics was the gaming communites reports back to us after E3 and to this day,the graphics on any mulit-console game will look identical because its not worth the extra time and money for game developers to spend on maxing out the ps3's pwoer in their game. Also 1080p isnt yet standard so the graphics wont even get their slight boost until then...

Now the person who getting the million dollars would be like big deal 100 dollars is nothin.
