Why is PS3 having problems playing certain DVD-Rs?

    Here's the deal.

I have an 80gb PS3 and it has never skipped.

I bought a second PS3 for movie purposes only. It's the 40gb model.

When playing DVD-R they some times skip. Not always though.

For example. I burned a movie recently and it skips and just stops at some points. I took it out and it solved them problem, then it did the same thing at a later point in the movie.

Meanwhile a $30 dvd player from Walmart plays the same movie flawlessly.

Does anyone know what the cause might be?

1.) Did you get a refurbished model? The laser might be old (though I doubt it).

2.) What did you burn it to? What brand of DVD?

3.) You had enough money to buy TWO PS3s? AND a $30 DVD player?

4.) There's some other possibilities, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

Sounds like a burn speed, authoring OR quality of DVDR media issue to me.

If it helps. While playing the DVD in the $30 DVD player, for a moment there were some pixelation on the screen. It played it fine but the PS3 would have gotten stuck at that same part.
