Why is SVCD file size always bigger than original MPG file?

    It was my first time using Nero to create SVCD. When I draged my 550MB MPG file into the playlist, it showed the right file size 550MB. When I started burning, in the beginning it still showed 550MB, but after a few seconds it showed 640MB. Then I checked the burned CD-RW, the size of SVCD file was really 640MB. I tried another couple of files and found always about 20% size increase. How could this happen? Could it cause by some wrong settings? I used mostly default settings. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    both VCD and SVCD don't do bit by bit copy to burn, but rather use 1 minute = 10mb ratio, and 800mb can fit one 700mb cd becuase it doesn't throw in the extra bits used for error correction and such. I know it's confusing, but normally you can throw 80min video on a 80min cd, 74 for 74, etc..

    Thanks a lot for your explanation. But in fact my encoded MPEG2 file is not standard SVCD. It's something between SVCD and DVD (more like miniDVD). Actually I have only 24min video in that 550MB MPG file, then I guess Nero should have treated it as normal file, maybe this has caused the size increase? I'd just like to know the exactly reason so that I can get good control of file size in the future.
