I suppose if you're going to test something, best to test it on a small group first. Can't imagine they'd test the UK first to see if it was worth rolling out in Ireland.

The answer to why us, to combat cable piracy, you dont think a company was going to sit back and let this keep going. what started out as "cable hobbyist's" turned into a full scale business for some and it hit the radar of those in question,

As advised in other threads, Ire is going to N3, not as a test, but as a way forward, they didnt test it on us, they did it on us, the UK is a different beast, they are going the IPTV encryption route, VM and Upc are differnet companies.

also v*rg*n have gone down the route & put hugh resources into taking shops & sellers of dodgy boxes to court, they have a backlog of sellers to take to court going back over 2 years when sellers sold boxes pre-flashed with working EMU's, through sellers records they have got hold of buyers details & have being sending them warning letters "it has come to our attention that you or someone at your address is in possession of an illegal..Blah..blah" at least they give you a chance to get rid of it.
as for IPTV encryption,..this has been in use in the US for some time & had also been got at by the hackers.

Ntl was bought by a dutch company called UPC.

Who are big boys and are currently quiet well off and could afford to bring ireland up to there standard.

all this talk about Virgin going IPTV is a roumer gone to far, i very much doubt they will be changing anything in the near future. unlike UPC, virgin have got fook all money and simply cant afford, esp giving the size of the UK in comparison to irl.
