Hi there. I normally come here for any problem I have with my pc and normally leave with it being fixed, but for this problem I can't seem to find an answer.

Basically my problem is that I have widescreen videos on my computer which I would like to be able to play at the correct resolution so that it uses up the whole of my widescreen monitor. Instead, what happens is for some reason there is added black space at the top and bottom of the video which should not be there, making it a 4:3 ratio rather than a 16:9 one. This is quite annoying as you can imagine.

My PC uses a NVidia GeForce 7600 GS graphics card and a 15.4 inch widescreen monitor that runs with a 1280x800 resolution. I have no problems with any game resolutions at all, they all play fine and use all of the screen. My graphics card is upto date with it's drivers as well.

The only thing I can think of is that somewhere there might be a control panel which is controlling the resolution of my videos, and that I just can't find it.

Oh and also, it's the same on all of the media players I've tried so far (media player 11, VLC, Media player classic).

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

Are you talking about playing DVD, mpeg 2/VOB on the hard drive or
    some other format ?

I took a look at the NTSC Beatles A Hard Days Night DVD, which is
useful for figuring this out because it's anamorphic and the picture
fills the whole height of the frame.

Since it's authored for 16/9 and fills the whole screen on a WS TV,
it *does* leave a small gap top and bottom on some PC monitors
(mine included) because the monitor A/R is typically 1.6 (1280/800)
while the A/R of the movie is 1.77 (16/9) which is narrower top to
    bottom.

I just figured out the problem. Basically it was any video file whether it was avi, mkv or wmv, or even dvd's.

I figured that if I couldn't find anything wrong with my graphics card settings, I might as well have a mess around with my codecs.

The codecs I use when I install them onto a new computer are the ones in the combined community codec pack which I normally have no problem with.

I tried messing around with the settings but couldn't find anything for my problem, so I decided to uninstall it and do a fresh install which has fixed the problem.

Thanks a lot for the reply though :) much appreciated.
