Hi guys, I recently just did a new build. The specs are: Motherboard: Asus M3A78-EM CPU: AMD Phenom X4 9600 @ 2.3ghz RAM: 6gb Kingston DDR2 800mhz HDD: WD Caviar 500gig PSU: Rosewill 450W ATX2.2 Logitech EX100 wireless keyboard and mouse Vista Home Premium 64-bit My problem is this: I just recently got vista up and a couple of programs. At random times, it could either be 2 min or 2 hours it will just randomly freeze. I am able to move the mouse but nothing else, not even CTRL+ALT+DEL. I have all the most recent driver updates I believe, and most recent BIOS. Im not sure if this is a virus, drivers, or a hardware problem. What I have dont to try and fix it: Went into MSCONFIG and disabled all the useless stuff and have the only important stuff running such as the OS, virus scan etc. Disabled all standbys and sleep mode. I don't think doing a diagnosive startup would make a difference considering I have had the problem since I first built it. Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
Im afraid I never ran vista myself, but im running Windows 7 beta right now. And its VERY similar to vista, from what I hear. And I think for entering the task manager you meen ctrl+shift+esc. For what ever reason, they changed it. Are you sure that your ram is good? If not there is a utility that can check ram for errors on bootup via cd/dvd drive. I suppose it could be some kinda video bug too. Computers do the darndest things huh. You can get the the downloads for memtest (Here)
He is accessing task manager the right way. I had a similar problem but it was with xp. The problem was with 2 programs that i had installed on the system did not like each other. It got so bad that it would eventually crash the whole system. After reinstalling windows a few times and over a period of about a week i figured out which 2 programs did not like each other. I can only remember that one of them was Spyware Doctor. Hope this helps. Good luck
Hmmm... long process, but it works I suppose. There are utilities that scan for conflicts, but I suppose they dont always find problems either. Oh... and the ctrl shift esc method in ATLEAST windows 7 is a more DIRECT means of reaching task manager. The traditional ctrl alt del, merely gives you options for what you wanna do. I dont know if this applies to vista, but I believe windows 7 is not much more than an upgrade to vista.
Thanks for the replys, I know for a fact in vista when you do CTRL+ALT+DEL it gives you a list of options such as lock the computer, start task manager etc. And I will run memtest and report back. Is there any other scans I can do to find out what the problem is? Thanks.
ctrl shift esc works in xp for direct route to task manager so will work for vista I did not know that thanks Omegaman 7
