hey i have a wireless netgear usb thing that works fine. but my dads going to be at work and theres a router and the wireless usb card thing is not strong enough to reach it. however, when we brought a laptop with built in wireless wifi it worked fine. so im wondering if theres a way to put a good wifi card or something in a pc or if anybody knows a desktop with the built in feature, besides the imac though. im kind of new at this
The simplest thing to do is to get a powerful antenna (at least +12dB) and attach it to the antenna port on a PCI wireless card.
thanks that response was helpful. what about a laptop that doesnt have built in wifi? i have an old laptop thats still functional but no built in wifi. do i get a pc card for it? and whats considered a powerful antenna for it?
For a laptop you need a PCMCIA card, the antenna thing still applies, decibel ratings in double figures are good.
Hi, although the antenna is a great idea, you will have greater reception getting a wireless Super G PCMCIA card as sammoris stated. I have used a number and they are great!! does the brand matter? like the router im going to connect to is netgear, does that mean i need to get a netgear branded pc card? and does the Super G PMCIA card work with any branded router? also, how can i tell if its compatible or fits into the laptop? the laptop im trying to get it for is kind of old. i know it has a slot for the pc cards but im not sure if its the same now. and whats better? 54M Wireless LAN or 802.11 a/b/g Wireless LAN?
Hi, what is the age and specs of the laptop your planning to get. If it has 128mb of memory and a meager processor, you will have problems of dropped signals and overall bad reception. No the brand does not matter in most cases. Be sure and read and ask if possible the compatibility with other units. Usually it is stated in the description or specs. All super g is 108mbs........
Hi, I forgot to tell you that 802.11 a/b/c is a standard for wireless technologies. Concentrate on the data rates...54mbs, 108mbs....
the laptop im trying to get this on is really old and i wouldnt be surprised if it had 128mb ram in it. so if its not going to help if i get a really good pcmcia card with a bad old laptop then maybe itd be best to just get a new one. update it
Hey, you dont necessarily have to get a new notebook, just a newer one, preferably with onboard wireless.........you will be happier in the end.
Yeah, you know, a built in mini pci wireless adapter is standard on most notebooks. I currently use a gateway 450ROG that I bought off ebay and fixed and hopped up. It is 2000 model and it works great. 15 inch screen, cdrw, wireless, and I replaced the 1.3 pentuim M with a 1.7 2MB cache I have seen them on ebay for about 250 - 300us....cheers

Hey, the card that is in the link is not a super g. I try to stay away from the very cheap cards........you get what you pay for. ive done some research for the desktop wireless pci. and i was thinking, would it work if i just used something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315041 and then just upgraded the antenna to 10db? i dont have much cash now so im trying to aim low. also, if i do get this, how do i install it onto my computer/motherboard?? if somebody can point me out to a 12db antenna thatd be great.
