I need some help with this. I have Road runner cable internet at my house, and I have the cable modem in the living room.

I'm going to get either a laptop or a desktop in my room. I want to get internet in there.

Do I need to hook up the wireless router to my cable modem, and keep it by the cable modem in the living room? Or can I put the wireless router somewhere else w/o hooking it up in the living room?

Also, my friend down the street has a wirless G setup. If I buy a "canntenna" (a big thing that broadcasts the signal much farther than normal) then can I just leech off his connection?

The whole point of all this work is my mom doesn't want internet in my room. Who knows why. But I dont want the wireless router visible if I have to keep it in the living room!

    Thanks for the hlep

The WiFi router has to be hooked up to the cable modem. Or, you could add a wireless card to the desktop in the living room. Then you would bridge the wireless and wired connection (both in the same machine) and set up internet connection sharing. Put a wireless card in your new laptop/desktop, set the card to ad hoc mode and surf away.

Or spend some more money and buy a modem/router/wireless combo from Linksys. Mom may never know the difference.
