Hello, I'm looking for an offline version of wikipedia, I know there is a german one but is there one available in English? I read on wikipedia that there are copies of the whole thing in tomeraider format. I dont know what this is, something to read documents on pda's as far as I know? Can I install this on pc and is the tomeraider version of wikipedia available in english? Also I saw a torrent which was about 7 and a half gb and was called "wikipedia 3.3 big.iso", I guess it's german, but this is the type of thing I'm looking for but in english, preferably with all images. Would be very handy to have on a double layer dvd. Anyone know about this?
Just one question: Why do you want an offline version? Wikipedia is an encyclopedia which contains frequently updated content. If or when you have it offline, the information would get outdated sooner or later. Do you think downloading about 7 GB of data is necessary when you can get the latest and specific information online? As for the torrent, I saw it, and it looks like an english version. After all 'BIG' is not a german word, and torrents of other languages (lingua?) are labelled as [GER], [FRA], [ESP] etc.. But there is always the risk of a fake torrent. This torrent dosen't seem to have any readme or info file, just a 7.5G iso image. What would you do if after downloading the whole big thing , you find out that it is something else? Think about it...
I could think of many reasons why he would want an offline version for instance : he has a laptop and will be traveling thus not having an internet connection. I have a wiki search engine built into my forefox You can get one by clicking the search box and clicking "add engines" which will take you to the download page. It's cool because it allows me to search facts on the fly.
bear in mind that Wikipedia info shouldn't be taken as gospel - case in point (hilarious but it makes my point) - http://www.theonion.com/content/node/50902
Ashwin, why do you think I want an offline version? What possible reason could there be to wanting a version of Wikipedia that one can access if no internet connection is available, hmm... Also, the torrent has the words "mit bilder", (with images) written next to the name of the iso file. Which you might have noticed if you paid more attention. "What would you do if after downloading the whole big thing , you find out that it is something else? Think about it..." Yeah you're right, what would I do? Probably kill myself. Thank you for advising I spend more thought on this, you have saved my friends and family a lot of grief.
Wikipedia has location specific infotmation besides the regular stuff. That information is bound to change. So if you are downloading wikipedia for that, it's really stupid. If you are looking for general information that won't change, why wikipedia? Encarta has all that in about 2.7GB Take a look at what YOU posted earlier... You haven't memtioned "mit bilder" anywhere. I searched for "Wikipedia 3.3 BIG.sio" on http://www.isohunt.com and found a torrent of this name and the size you mentioned, and so I assumed that this is the one which you found. OK, let me get this cleared up. You are either a rich snob who shells out a huge sum of money on a fast internet connection, and dosen't care if his bandwidth and money get wasted, or you are a maniac who dosent mind spending an insane amount of time on downloading 7.5 GB on something which you aren't sure of. If any of this is true, go ahead and kill yourself. You'll be doing yourself a favor.
Oi Ash, yeah the information in encyclopedias change, Encarta is not immune to this. Man has not reached the pinnacle of in-formation, this does not mean I'll wait until we do to start reading encyclopedias. By the way, I have encarta and britannica and while generally good I find them paltry in comparison to wikipedia particularly for more obscure entries. Yeah I know what I posted, the phrase "mit bilder" did not appear in the title of the torrent, as you should know if you checked it. It appeared in the title of the file which is not necessarily the same as the title of the torrent. This is why I said if you paid more attention you would have seen this. Hence what I said regarding the title of the torrent has no relevance to the matter of my trying to ascertain whether it was german or not. As for your final cretinous and wholly uninformed paragraph, I think it would take you a while to find someone who would decide I am a rich snob (particularly the rich part), not that I should bother to mention any of this to you. Or to mention that my internet connection is the cheapest possible one available in my neck of the woods. Or that I definitely don't consider spending a week, give or take, downloading 7.5gb "an insane amount of time". And I guess by definition it should be wasted on you when I mention that to evoke a connection between the amiability of a persons character and intellect and the amount of money in their pocket, is nothing more than perverse bigotry, and if possessed should be kept to oneself.
I don't know what you meant by 'obscure', but I was talking about LOACTION specific information. Like a motel, or a resort and all that. Wikipedia specializes in that. As for the term "mit bilder", that was my mistake. I did not see the contents of the torrent properly. "mit bilder" seems to be added to the name of the FOLDER, not the iso image, so that did not catch my attention. Sorry for that. Finally, for your last paragraph, I was not at all trying to 'find out' what you are. Just that when I asked you to think about it, you took it way too literally. Where I stay, time is considered to be important, and so is the money I spend on a broadband connection. Downloding 7.5GB of data will take roughly 10 and a half nights for me, and that is why I suggested encarta to you. Not that I dislike wikipedia, infact personally I recommend wikipedia to people who don't want to download a whole encyclopedia. LDee, I am really sorry if I was rude before, which I probably was. I was just trying to help you by saving you some time. Let's stop arguing and let's keep this thread peaceful.
Peace..at last! Anyway, I found one. It has a file with the extension "tr3", which I've never heard of before. The name of the file is "WP_EN_(P)PC_TXT_1GB.tr3". So it's english for sure, but i'm not sure it contains images. It says "TXT"... Tell me if you are interested, I'll PM the link to you. Not sure whether posting direct links here is allowed... EDIT: The filesize is also ridiculously smaller (1GB). I really doubt this one. It has 8 seeds though. Maybe it really dosen't contain images. If you don't find any others, I guess you will have to use this one, and if you need images, you'll have to get it from the site from the computer which you used to download this file.
I think a .tr3 is something to do with compression... Try extracting it with winrar or somthing like that - maybe winzip...?
I havent downloaded it yet. I just saw the extension on the site. EDIT: creaky, that link says something about a 1GB card. What is it exactly?
