hi guys, im encoding an avi file using tmpgenc, the movie was in two parts so i encoded the first half of the movie by just specifying the encode size to be 50% of the disk, anyway im now encoding the second avi file and when i again choose the size of the mpeg file to fit 50% of the dvd again it shows the video bitrate to be 2900kbps although i know that dvds work at 4000, will my standalones still play this dvd or will i lose some quality, also if an encoded file is over 4000kbps will the additional quality not show on my standalone, will it only play 4000kbps and ignore he rest of it
    thnxinadvance

A DVD will work at any Bitrate up to about 9800 but quality will suffer the lower it is. Bitrate = Quality = File Size. You are probably thinking of the audio which needs to be 48,000 Hz to be DVD compatible.

ok thanx for that, you see i encoded the first half to 5000kbps i never really check as long as the file fits 50% because iv encoded loads of avis and ive never had a problem before. what youre saying about the legnth, thats probably what the problem here is, the second part is over half an hour longer. they have been unevenly distributed. Ok i think ill just settle for the slight loss in quality, just one more thing can standalones play over 4000kbps or will they just disregard it and just play at 4000 because id rather encode all my movies until just 4000kbps to shave some time off the encode process unless it makes a difference in quality

As far as I know, standalones play the DVD at whatever Bitrate it's encoded at. I try to keep all my encodes around 6000 and do notice a quality loss at 4000. Maybe, rather than lowering your Bitrate for a speed advantage, try a faster encoder. TMPGEnc is good but the slowest I've seen. Vso ConvertXtoDVD will automatically adjust the Bitrate for you, create a menu to select from, has excellent quality. is easy and, on my machine, up to 8 hour faster. Authors and burns, too. There is a trial but it will put a watermark in your video.

thanx for the offer but i think ill take the tmpgenc card, my arse really does hurt when i see not better than excellent quality
besides iv played with tmpgenc to make it go twice as fast
just one more thing is there a codec or something that i can install to make tmpgenc encode with sound because it doesnt like ac3 very much and so it doesnt encode with the audio, what i have to do is that i have to use this little proggie called avi audio decompressor and it makes me a file about 2 gb big that i can incorporate into tmpgenc with the video file and it just decompresses the audio into a format that tmpgenc will recognise, the only problem is that it takes quiet a while to decompress and its 2 gb iv installed that ac3 filter but that doesnt seem to work either is there anything i can do

You could avoid the uneven distribution by merging your AVi's first in VirtalDubMod (Direct stream copy) takes only a couple of minutes.

Another nice feature of ConvertX is that it handles all DD audio.

    Or get this:

i dont get all this extracting audio and converting to wav files and mp3s, arent wavs rubbbish cos i just want the best quality, what i do right now is use a proggie called avi audio decompressor and it makes me a huge file avi.pcm file or summat like that and i have to browse it into tmpgenc in audio with the video, and that makes it work, i check whether audio will come on or not using a feature on tmpgenc which tells me whether the sound will come on after encoding or not. i already have hat ac3 plug in installed but it doesnt seem to work iv d/l'ed it again using that link and will tell you if it works or not.

My problem with TMPGEnc was that files encoded to mpg looked great but had no audio. Creating and then using that wav as the audio source in TMPGEnc solved this. A wav also only takes a few minutes to create, so if that AC3 plug-in for TMPGEnc doesn't work, no harm in trying.

nope i installed the ac3 thing and it still dont work this is what i did to test it. i loaded the avi that i know doesnt work, and in project wizard 3/5 check the box that says source range on the new pop up window check the 'display audio' box and click and hold the play button and it shows if the audio will work or not, another way to check is that i clicked in project wizard 3/5 'other setting'>audio tab>check use audio edit box and click setting if you press play youll be able to here the audio that should be actually playing in the avi file.
these are the measures that i checked whether sound will work or not, although i havent actually encoded an avi to mpeg and found that the sound isnt working do you think i should

Sorry, I have no idea on TMPGEnc if that doesn't work. I would give VSO a try, I think you'll be pleased with the results. I use an encoder I consider better than TMPGEnc and find myself using ConvertXtoDVD more and more often and for all AC3.

yeah i encoded a small sample file anyway and the ac3 audio doesnt work, but id still rather use tmpgenc though, i just want to ask though, what is ac3 and what is the wav audio and what is it that im decompressing my ac3 audio into i get an additional file called
'p-cr1_pcm' where the original is called 'p-cr1' (the name of the actual file is p-cr1 its just the _pcm bit that is added in the resulting decompressed file) and which one of these 3 is the best in quality.

This will explain it better than I can; not too knowledgeable on this: http://www.afterdawn.com/glossary/ I believe pcm is the best quality though someone correct me if I'm wrong.

ok ther is no pcm definition but according to on ewebsite pcm can play upto 6mb/s which is pretty high but what i dont get is that the file that iv decompressed is ony about 60kb/swhich is even less than the original mpeg layer 3(is that mp3) which was 60kbps, the final encoded file gives an audio bit rate of 364 but its mpeg layer 2 (is that mp2) so how can pcm be the best unless the the decompressed file that i have is not a legit pcm but then another sie says that ac3 removes noise and is the common format for hdtv so thats gotta be the best and then another website says pcm isnt used because the file is too big or summat like that
    im confused

EDIT: done a bit more research and see that pcm is just too good but takes too much space and mp2 is not that good therefore the best is ac3, ac3 is better than wav isnt it? what i dont get is all this channel business 6 channels and 5 and 8 channel??????
so why cant tmpgenc encode with ac3, is there any way to make it work with ac3 besides the d/l link above

Sorry, as I said, I'm not too strong on audio. I'm not the person to start explaining it.

WAV basically is PCM. An original wav file will always sound better (and is much larger) than any compressed formats. That's also one of the reasons DTS can sound better than much smaller/compressed Dolby sound on DVDs.

An example would be to rip an audio CD song to WAV and listen to it. It will sound like the original but it's a huge file. Now convert that to an mp3 and it doesn't quite sound as good although it's now much, much smaller.

With movie (Xvid) AVi's the AC3 file is basically an mp3, hence the much smaller file size. But going to WAV from AC3/mp3 doesn't really improve the sound but can help in audio sync and authoring problems due to the difficulty some apps have with AC3 mp3 VBR (variable bit rate) sound.

The beauty of ConvertXtoDVD is it's ability to quickly convert, with high quality almost any Xvid/Dvix AVI. VBR mp3 sound makes no difference and if the source is 6 channel Dolby so is the result without the need for any add-ons.

yes i understand the procedure that by encoding each time you lose a bit of quality but does that mean that if you encode first time from say for example mp3 audio in my case to ac3 then the results will be better than if you encode first time from mp3 to mp2 to burn onto a dvd

No you don't quite understand the procedure. Going from mp3 to wav changes nothing sonically. You aren't encoding per se. In NeroVision if have a WAV source it will sound weaker when converted, do to it's Dolby conversion/compression unless you choose LPCM audio.

It will still be the same sonically.

I don't think so and it's Dolby is only 2.0, no 6 channel etc.

i dont understand what you said in the first paragraph, what do u mean by sonically, so does that mean to say that theres no point in me encoding to ac3 if it wont make a difference but doesnt it like remove noise and stuff
