i just had a quick question, i updated my spy sweeper to 5.0 (the one everyone is having the problems with) and ever since my pc will not shut itself down. it will not shut down by going to start>turn off computer>turn off. i have had to manually shut down the pc by holding in the power button. the thing is before i updated to 5.0,when i still had version 4.5 my sweeps were taking around 45 minutes. now after the update they only take about 12 minutes. but like i stated it will not shut itself down. i am not a computer expert by any means and i'm wondering if this will harm my pc by holding in the power buttom when its time to turn it off. i have done research, and it possibly has something to do with a program conflict...? but when i go back to version 4.5 the pc acts normal, go bact to 5.0 and the problem starts again. i have contacted support from spy sweeper to no solution. i like the shorter sweep time for sure and i don't wanna buy another program. my subscription is up in march 07. but i also don't want to hurt my puter. so what do you think i should do you supersmart people at AD?

Physically, you wont damage anything. Your data on the other hand is another issue. By manually shutting it off, you introduce a chance of losing/corrupting data. Take a look at the event viewer to see if it is spitting any errors on shutdown when you have 5.0 installed. ControlPanel>Admin Tools>Event Viewer. Look for warnings or errors. Post back any errors you may have. There should be at least something there. Maybe a userenv warning about not unloading the registry???

To fix this problem, just shutdown Spy Sweeper by right-clicking the tray icon and then tick the "Do Not Show This Message Again" (or something like that) mark. Then, restart and your problems are solved!

@DoubleDwn the only thing that come up that had to do with a log off was a userenv warning as follows:
Windows saved user VALUED-A50B7DA5\owner registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when its no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

none of the other warnings or errors had any thing to do with shutdown.

@gogochar i tried doing what you suggested and restarted and the pc will not shut down correctly.

is there anything else i should try?

Try uninstalling Spy Sweeper, do a System Restore point back towards the day before you upgraded. Then, once your computer has restarted, install Spy Sweeper again. When it says "Do you want to restart your computer" (or something like that), say yes. Then, when your computer is back, try right-clicking, shutdown (shutting down Spy Sweeper, not your computer). You will want the option "Do Not Show this Message again" ticked, meaning it should not prompt you with showing that stupid message again. After Spy Sweeper is no longer in your system tray, restart your computer and then shut down your computer one more time. If your computer still shows an "End Now" message post back here.

o.k so i still couldn't get this program to let my PC shut down correctly so i decided i would just go back from 5.0 to the last 4.5 version which does work correctly until they get there problems fixed with 5.0 or my subscription runs out, whichever happens first. but on 5.0 my definitions were up to 148,376 and now on 4.5 i only have 145,somethin'. and it does say that i am up to date.?.?.? so does anyone have any ideas of why this is,or what i can do.

Sounds like a tough one. You might want to post this in the Windows Software discussion. They might have a little more information on the advanced portions of software. I am starting to notice that Spy Sweeper is starting to damage my computer. It's messed up twice now and I don't like to manually turn off my computer. Sorry about your problems. If I find any more info, I'll PM you OK?

No prob. Hey, I think I may have found a temporary fix. Before you turn off your computer, you may want to manually shut down Spy Sweeper, to avoid any further damage to your computer. This works for me, and I hope it works for you. I just hope their next update of this wonderful program (you do have to admit it's the best on the marker!) fixes this problem. If not, they'll be flustered down to their knees with hate mail!

yeh i love the program. the update to 5.0 looks great, and my scans were cut down to a quarter of the time it took with 4.5, i just hope they can get the problems straightened out soon.
