I just bought a new computer but it has no operating system in it. I was wondering if i could transfer the hard drive from my old computer to the new one without having to reinstall windows xp operating system. So in other words will the old hard drive boot windows xp in the new computer without having to do any configuration?
There wil be a little work that needs done but not much. The good news is that youll be able to keep everything on your hard drive such as documents installed programs etc.. This will overwrite windows files and it will cause you to loose windows updates that youve applied or any service packs installed. So if you try to just directy boot it should give you a blue screen and then th machine will reboot unless of course it has the exact same model of motherboard. To keep all your thing you just install windows again but instead you choose repair. If your new PC if similar to the old one (i.e. same mnuf mobo and CPU)it might work without repairing but you'll need to reactivate Windows (unless you have a preactivated version). I changed my cpu, mobo so basically totally new PC albeit the same manufacturered components. When I booted up I was told I needed to re-activate windows so I tried but the code would not work. It then askls you to phone a Microsoft customer service number and I just told them that my hard drive died and they gave me the new activation code. Was simple for me. Saying all that it may actually beneficialy to do a fresh install of Windows if your hardware is much different from the original. All sorts of configurations from the old PC can cause problems.
