will xvid play on my phillips blu ray

    Just got a Philips Blu ray player bdp3000 but cant see if it will play xvid files, tried a .avi file and it wouldnt work and am just wondering will it play other types cant check at moment as have loaned out my collection to a friend

    i have tried copying onto a dvdrw disc but it keeps coming up unknown disc im totally useless at this sort of thing, its an avi file but im wondering is there some sort of security lock on the device so that you cant play copied films
