    Hello AD!!

Ok, so I have an unusual issue. I have 1 computer and 1 laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit Edition Build 7600 on both of them, and both have all updated (and proper) drivers. I have tried installing these games in attempts to see what sorts of games will work and what wont: Left 4 Dead, Heroes of Might and Magic V, and Warcraft III.

    My laptop:
    AMD Sempron Processor
    Nvidia GeForce M8200
    3GB RAM

    Desktop:
    Intel E2200 Dual Core
    ATI Radeon HD 2600XT
    2GB Corsair RAM
    Gigabyte GA-P31-S3G Motherboard

On my laptop, I am able to successfully install all of the games, but Warcraft III will not play, not even with the latest 1.24a patch (BSOD). Heroes V initially gave me trouble and gave me a BSOD, but once i reinstalled it, it worked just fine. Left 4 Dead gave me no issues.

On my desktop, however, NOTHING will play. All of my regular programs (such as Nero, NOD32, etc) run just fine, not a single hitch, but all of my games give me either a BSOD, or just turn my screen black for 4-5 seconds and restart my computer (more so the latter). Unlike my laptop, I have my Windows 7 on a separate partition (20GB), and i install everything on another partition. I don't know if this is a factor, but as far as i know, it shouldn't matter. I have tried running them all on different compatibility modes, and have run them as a system administrator, and they all yield the same result.

I am not seeing any yellow exclamation marks by any of my devices in the "device manager" screen, so I don't think it's that. Here's what drivers I have installed...maybe its just not properly recognizing any conflicting drivers, or maybe i'm missing some necessary ones, but all appears right to me.

Intel E2200 Dual Core - None

    ATI Radeon HD 2600XT - Drivers & Tools | GAME.AMD.COM (Driver Ver. 8.632.0.0)

    GIGABYTE GA-P31-S3G Motherboard - GIGABYTE - Support&Download - Motherboard - Driver - GA-P31-S3G (rev. 1.0) (Chipset Driver Ver 8.3.1.1009)

Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio -
Creative Worldwide Support > X-Fi Xtreme Audio (Driver Ver. 1.04.0090)

Thats about it...I'm still unsure of what to do. Im still troubleshooting with no luck, any further advice would be appreciated. THANK YOU

I seem to have found an article where someone is facing similar issues, just not the same OS (XP 64-bit), maybe there's something in there that could help lead to an answer?

PLEASE help me, this is driving me CRAZY!! Thanks in advance AD!

This is what you get for using junk beta software .. probably a dx10 problem at the root of it.

Unfortunately, as far as i know, 7600 is the RELEASE version. I dont think it's so much a windows 7 problem as it is a 64-bit issue, however. Most people running the 32-bit version don't really seem to have too many problems. I haven't tried x64 before, but if this is the result, i don't want anything to do with them.

    Any more suggestions anyone? :-/

You are using outdated drivers. The latest drivers for that video card are version 9.7 the drivers you are using were released before your operating system. This is probably the problem, but I see a few other issues too:

-Get your audio & network drivers from realtek.

-Get your chipset drivers from Intel.

-Is your audio card PCI or PCIE? The drivers you are using are only for the PCI version, and will crash the PCIE version.

-Download the latest directx redistributable from microsoft.

-Make sure virtualization is enabled in bios.

Windows 7 seems to be very good for games (I only speak for the x64 version, not the x86 version). For me, games support has been far better than that of XP64 or Vista64.

Thank you VERY much for a constructive reply Killerbug =) Well, i THOUGHT i had updated drivers...epic fail.

It's really strange that you mention my video card drivers being out of date (which they totally are), because i only got those drivers a week ago via the same method of finding the newer drivers off AMD's we. I'm gonna be SO annoyed (and relieved at the same time, lol) if that's been the problem all along. Although from the sound of it, it might be more of a collaborative issue between multiple out of date drivers.

I do need to get network drivers, thanks for the realtek suggestion.

I checked dxdiag and it said i had Direct X 11, so it seems i'm up to date on that.

I have a few questions if you could help me please, i'd greatly appreciate it!

When it comes to chipset drivers however, i'm always a little confused as to what to get. Is there a difference between motherboard drivers and chipset drivers? Sould i even worry about motherboard things (i know abou BIOS flash, thats about it with that). What about drivers for the processor itself, or are those technically the same as the "chipset" drivers?

I have the PCI version of the Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio. You're saying i should get realtek drivers instead of the SB ones? Won't that remove the features of the sound card (the Crystalizer and such)? Or are you saying to install those realtek drivers on top of that?

Also, do you suggest realtek drivers because they are the hardware included on my Mobo? Or are they just good general drivers (both sound/network)?

Lastly, what is virtualization/what does it do? (this one really isnt all that necc to know, but i'm a bit curious)

Thank you SO much!! I'll let you know how it fairs in the next couple days, currently out of town.

Chipset drivers are the mainboard drivers, but they don't always include the audio, video, and other onboard devices (sometimes they do). They come with the mainboard (on the CD), but you can get newer versions of them from the mainboard manufacturer's website, and even newer versions of them from the Intel site.

That is only if you are using both at once. If you have the realtek sound dissabled, then you don't need these drivers.

They make the codecs for some of the devices on your mainboard. These are "software" based devices, and get great bennifit from new drivers (unless they are disabled of course).

It lets 32-bit programs run nativly as 32-bit programs from within a 64-bit OS. This improves performance of 32-bit windows programs a little, and makes things like virutal windows xp possible.
