Hello everyone, Here is my dilemma. I purchases a copy of windows xp over a year ago. The real deal with serial number, etc. I had installed it in my previous pc. I recently bought a new pc and installed windows xp. It tells me I have x amount of days to activate windows. Fine. Well, not fine until last night. I tried to activate windows and it tells me I have to call Microsoft. Sure enough, I call and they tell my that the registration key is only for one pc. I explained that I purchased the an authentic/real copy of windows xp and have upgraded my pc and got ridd of old one. Well, they would have non of it. They tell my I have to purchase a brand new copy of windows because they can't give me a new id tag/key. I almost lost it at that point. I mean, I can understand what they are trying to do. However, if it's for my own pc, then what's the point? They want me to spend $199.00. In the meantime, I still have like 10 days before my windows locks up. In the meantime, I am thinking about some sort of alternate. I honestly feel like wiping out windows out of my hard drive. I'm tired of Microsoft's monopoly. I'm not a real tech, therefore, don't know if that would be a wise thing for me to do. Is there a way around this?? I would appreciate any advise. Thanks again for your time and apologize if my question seems stupid.
My GF's father just went thought the same thing and he's really pissed. So i know exactly what your talking about. I was just considering switching over to Linux9 lastnight (never delt with it before but looked like it was just like Windows) but it seems that most of the programs I run like Photoshop, Office... and so on, do not run on Linux. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
I ALSO THOUGHT ABOUT THE SAME THING LAST NIGHT. I RAN INTO A LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM BY XANDROS. IT LOOKS SOMEWHAT LIKE WINDOWS. I'M REALLY CONSIDERING IT BECAUSE THIS IS JUST STRAIGHT CRAP. ah but your still buying the CD which you dont need to... here is a link to the Linux distrabutions... just enter the Language Catagory and Platform... find the one you want and start the download. http://www.linux.org/dist/list.html and here is a load of applications that work for Linux (that are also Free) http://www.linux.org/apps/index.html Photoshop is my only concern... I have my business menu's and everything in PSD format... and from what i've seen it won't work on Linux. DOH!
Call microsoft again to activate. Say its only on the computer that you are using and you just formated your hard drive. works every time.
when you register, i thought they got the serial # and everything of your processor/mobo and everything else to make sure your not using it on other PC's?
this is what you tell them 1. no matter what ,,,always say that the xp you have has never been installed on another pc, once you say anything about another pc they will not give you the setting codes, there is no way to explain it away, the ppl you are talking to know little or nothing about PC's and I think they are instructed to not let you have the setting code if they hear anything about another pc. 2. this is what you say ... no, has never been installed on any other PC's just this one. I need a setting code because my mainboard went bad abd I had to get a new one,,, if they ask anything say, I had to get a different model mainboard, the old one is no longer made. don't vollenteer info either.
