Occasionaly while using my computer (xp) i recieve you the usual microsoft error. Windows Explorer has encountered an error and needs to close. This just recently started happening and I am curious why. After click the ok button or watever of course start menu and such goes away along with desktop icons. Soon after explorer resumes and appears back on my screen. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Its not a big problem but im curious to whether it can lead to something bigger... thanks for any help.
i used to have this exact same problem, it lead to a BSOD - NOT GOOD!!. the best thing to do is to uninstall any of the MOST RECENT software installed, meaning either the last 1 or 2 programs oyu installed, that is if you installed them only a short while ago. they try using CCleaner to clean your registry nd junk files. if this doesnt help then im not sure, cause i fixed mine through a reformat.
Oh great. Thanks for the quick response. A BSOD? i am unsure of what that is exactly... i was installing several large software programs like home architecture stuff and photoshop but i removed all those... i use ccleaner regualarly and xptools and a few other reg cleaners. Thanks for your help though i really appreciate it.
Since Explorer is the UI shell for Windows, any third party software like Winzip, WinRar...audio/video codec packs or other right click menu items can create instability for the shell. Unfortunately, when the shell crashes it won't give up the ghost that easily and it's a pain in the backside trying to decifer what program caused the problem. First step, try to remember back to the time when it didn't crash and remove any programs you may have added. I had a heck of a time once with a right click menu mp3/wav converter..and it took forever figuring that out because the company kept insisting that it wasn't their software doing it. Until I gave them as many screenshots and error codes I could...then all I got were apologies and that they were working on a cure.
