I just saw a strange message that popped up on my computer. It reads as follows: [bold]FILES THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR WINDOWS TO RUN PROPERLY HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY UNRECOGNIZED VERSIONS. TO MAINTAIN SYSTEM STABILITY, WINDOWS MUST RESTORE THE ORIGINAL VERSIONS OF THESE FILES. INSERT WINDOWS XP HOME ED SERVICE PACK 1 CD NOW.[/bold]
I have no idea how this came about, nor do I think I have this service pack they ask for.
The XP came with the computer purchased from Gateway, whose warranty has expired already.
The only cd's I see I have are: Gateway OP System XP. Gateway drivers.
Is this serious, how would I go about repairing?

Insert the XP cd. You have drivers that have been replaced or deleted somewhere for whatever reason.

So I would simply put the XP cd in and install?
Even though it is already installed?
I can "layer" an installation ontop of what I have?
    Thanks for the info.
I'll await a reply before I proceed. In case I screw anything up.

Well, technically you can perform an "in-place" upgrade of xp, but that's not what you want to do. I was saying when you receive the prompt
insert your xp cd so that it can
Service Pack 1 just means that SP1 is integrated on your xp cd. The Gateway OP System XP cd is the one you want to insert.

If your PC is working all right after the warning message just leave it, Its happened to me several times after installing a program and nothing has happened.
Its just XP turning its nose up at somebody else's program.
