Has anyone had a problem where Windows Media Player will play some .avi files and not others? The .avi file will play in my Divx player but when go to play it in Windows Media player I get the message that "Windows has encountered a problem". Any ideas?

this is because media player does not support all avi formats it is dependant on how the file was compressed and with what program which determines whether it will work or not i have the same problem with mine and what i do is just use divx player for them files but when media player doesn't play them i usually get the message that the codec is not supported but sometimes only rarely will i get error message try and look at the details of the error it may be something very simple ok :)

hi, i had the excat same problem. the best thing to do is download the k-lite codec pack. install it and then you'll be able to play every thing on your windows media and other players. its an all in one so if you have a burner which wont burn avi files you can do it now cuz k-lite will automaticly decode it so its ready to burn. hope this helped! oh yeah, you can get the k-lite codec pack from: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

Thanks for your responses. I downloaded and installed the codec as suggested and it works.
