hi guys im having a problem with windows update on some machines at my work. I work at the jordan school district down in utah. theres some machines that people are wanting me to fix, they cant get updates from microsoft. some are running windows xp home, windows xp pro, and some with windows 2000. some computers work with getting the updates and some dont. even when i did a clean install on a windows 2000 computer it still was unable to get updates.

any ways is what happends, i go to the microsoft update page and it shows the page where you choose custom or express. i have chose both of them and when i choose either one it brings me to the checking for the latest updates for your computer screen and just sits there at that screen for 15 min straight. then it finally brings me to a different page. but the page that it brings me to is an error page. the microsoft error that it gives me is 0x8DDD0009. i have tried everything to fix this. i have had no luck. i have tried setting static and dynamic ip addresses, i have tried deleting the temp internet files, even going into cmd prompt and typing proxycfg -d hitting enter then typing net stop wuauserv, hitting enter then typing net start wuauserv, hitting enter. i have also tried reinstalling service pack 2. that also did not work. i have basically tried everything i can think of. can anyone please help me. im in desparate need.

    thank you everyone in advance

    Try this:

Open the Application Event log by going to Start, Run, and typing in
    eventvwr.msc
    Click OK.
Under Source, look for an error associated with MsiInstaller.
    Double click it.
If the error states that " MsiInstaller could not find msxml3.dll ",
then go to Start, Run, and type in
    regsvr32 msxml3.dll
    Click OK.
You should get a confirmation message that the .dll file was
    successfully registered.

I upgraded a PC from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. I tried to use Microsoft Update to install updates. I manually installed some prerequisite software, including IE 6, Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, and Windows Installer 3.1 after each attempt was rejected. Finally, the PC stopped prompting me to install stuff. Unfortunally, this was because they were replaced by error number 0x8DDD0009.

CONTINUED...I tried a freeware app called Dial-a-Fix. It didn't work. I tried the remedy above, but was told that the file did not exist. When I use Automatic Update, the updates install error free.

@gamer17: Does the Event Viewer show anything odd? Warnings/errors from the Event logs would really help us track this down.

I'm running into this problem at work. 2 out of 3 machines will no longer update. Of the 2 that won't update is a PC I've just done a clean install of W2k and the other PC had been able to update until a couple of days ago; both PC's had W2k installed with a disk that had Service Pack 4. The PC that can still update was installed with Service Pack 3 and later updated with Service Pack 4. Why I mention installation CD's is because Microsoft quit packaging Microsoft VM (Virtual Machine - Microsoft's answer to Java that Sun Microsystems sued Microsoft over. See article http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=820101 ) The PC that still updates has in the browser's "Tools->Internet Options->Security Tab->Custom Level" a "Microsoft VM/Java Permissions" setting and the 2 PC's that won't update do not have Microsoft VM installed. I'm curious if anyone who cannot update (either Windows 2000 or XP Home/Pro) has Microsoft VM installed. Also, on my Windows XP Home computer which does still update, there is the Microsoft VM setting in the browser. I have tested in a limited fashion in that I have done another clean install with a W2k Service Pack 3 disk and then installed Service Pack 4 (in other words, this time, the install included Microsoft VM) on the PC that wouldn't update that had been previously installed with the W2k Service Pack 4 disk and it now updates just fine.

Ok, I'd turned the net upside down trying to solve this.....

Assuming your symptoms, as well as the error message, are along the lines of SVCHOST.EXE looping and maybe even a hard reset required to recover......

Also assuming you have checked the c:\windows\windowsupdate.log (or Microsoftupdate.log, if appropriate) for fatal errors at your last attempt. Also assuming there is no 'loop' displayed there (I first saw a, kind of, loop along the lines of V3.1 required... V3.0 installed, I just installed V3.1 manually)

Download 'Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer v2.0 (for IT Professionals)' from the microsoft site and install it.

Run it. fix all errors reported by it. (gee I got 48 first try, I also avoided 'rebooting' every time it wanted to, I'd still be at it now if I hadn't)

Now try Windows update...... Well it worked for me!

I recently ran into the 0x8DDD0009 error on a Windows XP laptop. Automatic Updates would hang and both Windows Update and Microsoft Update would take a really long time and then report 0x8DDD0009. I tried reinstalling in different ways and manually applying different patches. Finally after reading this thread I put Microsoft's Java VM on. Windows Update and Microsoft Update still had the problem, but I was then able to use Automatic Updates to update the system (though very slowly). After that Windows Update worked fine. I have installed plenty of clean OSes before and have never had a problem like this before (and hope I don't again).
