Help, last night I found the notice of new updates from windows. I did a few things first then let it do its thing. restarting takes forever now, was locked up. went to msconfig cleared start ups and did a restart same problem very slow (worse than my old 233 mhz.) bought up task manager and it showed 100% processor speed being used but I couldn't find anything maxing it (task mgr 22%) I run/update avg daily, adaware, spybot both updated and ran daily. Did a system restore to a week ago and it still creeps along and says I have windows updates needed. I'm guessing maybe I lost something hardware? at the same time as update. I'm lost don;t suspect update now because i have'nt done it. xp pro amd xp 1600 512 ddr Any where to start looking ran mbm5 says 123* processor temp. should be ok been 88-90* last 2 days and I'm not running a/c in april I refuse. kurt
Try System File Checker. Go to Start > Run > type "sfc /scannow" Without the quotes. Have your Windows CD handy as it will ask for it. After that, go into Explorer. Right click on the C drive. Select Properties. Click on the Tools tab on the window that opens. Select Error Checking. Click both boxes, then start. It may say it needs to run the check on reboot. If it does, then reboot. Allow it to run all the tests (it will take a short while. Go have a drink while waiting). When everything is complete and it boots into Windows, reboot again. Post back with your results.
dolphin, I'm going to keep that info bookmarked. I wonder if the update file came thru corrupted the first time. I ended up letting it do its thing and went to bed. When I got up this morning it was running. I did a restart to see what happens and was just like the days before the update. I once had windows contact me about the legitamacy of my os and said they would get back to me if it wasn't right. I did buy it online, I did send an email to the company and they responded very fast as to they were legit and to forward any microsoft piracy issues to them. I wondered if that was the problem also but apparently not. thank you for the info kurt
If the update was corrupted, it would not have installed. Guess it just wasn't finished, for some reason. (?) Glad to hear your back to normal. You should print out the info I posted, it can solve a lot of problems, if needed.
