my windows update is set to automatic..my last update changed a few things that made my system annoying..when i shut my computer down it now looks like the old style drop down window and asks what i want to do...shut down, hibernate ect....and when i restart im prompted to push alt.ctrl.del. as it states it is a safer way to restart..which i do ..and then a blank desk top appears, no icons. for about 5 min. is this normal or what.. anyone else have this trouble from the most recent update?
I'm not sure whether you're asking for help, or if others have the same problem. If it's the first one, read on. Go to Start -> Control Panel -> User accounts -> Change the way users log on or off Make sure both the options are selected (a tick mark should appear in both the boxes). If they are not, click the empty box to tick it, and then click Apply. Check if you still have the problem. If you do, you will have to disable the secure logon feature (that's a name i've given it ;-) Go to Start -> Run type 'gpedit.msc' (without the quotes), and press Enter. Navigate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\Security Options in the left pane. Now, if you look to the right, a number of entries will show up. Look for this entry 'Interactive logon: Do not require CTRL+ALT+DEL'. Double-Click it, click 'Enabled', and then click OK. I don't know you will be prompted to restart your computer, but if you are, then do so and check if you have the problem. Hope this solves your issue. TIP: Next time, before wasting your valuable time to post on a forum and waiting for somebody to reply, why don't you try searcing the Help and Support center built into Windows XP first? It can be accessed from Start -> Help and Support
i was asking the above question just to make sure im not the only one having this trouble...but i tried what you said and nothing worked..whe i tried to 'run' gpedit.msc it said invalid entry....and i searched the help menue and found nothing on this topic.
Sorry for being a little rude in the last post. I told you 'bout the Help center just for your convenience in the future. When you said 'nothing works', did you mean that your previous probmem of the logon screen was not solved too? Does the Run command really say 'Invalid Entry'? I've never heard that before, and I don't think Windows XP will give such vague error messages for the 'Run' command. The following text is from http://www.computing.net/security/wwwboard/forum/17908.html If this donen't work too, I think it may be a virus. Try doing a virusscan. If you can't run it for some reason, try running it thru safe mode. Some virus scanners don't work in safe mode, so you will have to download a free virusscanner that can work in safe mode. I can give you some options for this if u like, but I will have to search first. Tell me if anything above worked.
