Windows XP has been running unusually slow since yesterday, and after about 10 minutes of activity the whole thing crashes and I have no choice but the turn my computer off. It started after I downloaded Google Chrome. I immediately noticed the difference and ran an AVG scan, which found a trojan horse, but the system crashed before the scan finished. A second AVG scan and a Malwarebytes scan found nothing. Your Log is clear of malware. Any problems? Check this site out to help speed it up some: http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/slowcomputer.html 2oG
The system started to run so slowly and was hanging up so often that just went ahead and reinstalled Windows XP. After hassling with the drivers I finally got it running like new, until I got Firefox and starting downloading some basic programs (flash, winrar etc). There's some infection that's disabled AVG, Malwarebytes, even HijackThis (they can be downloaded, but they won't start up). It may be coincidence but this forum won't even load (I'm accessing it offline). The system is running as speedily as ever and shows no signs of the problem before I reinstalled XP, but how can I get rid of this bug?
If you have MBAM installed on your machine, un-install it now.. Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and before the Windows icon appears, press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode with Networking". Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program. • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All. • Click the Empty Selected button. • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All • Click the Empty Selected button. If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All • Click the Empty Selected button. If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop. Before saving it to your desktop, rename the file to: “m_b_a_m- setup.exe” Double-click m_b_a_m-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program. • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish. • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version. • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan. • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results. • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- Don't forget this. • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt • Please post the MBAM Log and a fresh HJT log in your next reply and let me know any problems that remain……. 2oG
I successfully installed and ran the ATF cleaner, but Malwarebytes, even in safe mode and after renaming the setup file before downloading, will not start up after it's installed. Checking the "launch Malwarebytes" option at the end of the setup just leads to the program shutting down, and clicking the icon has no effect. Same with HijackThis. Earlier today I ran that ariva rescue disk with no luck. Is there any other program out there that this bug can't disable?
Sounds like you got a tough one…. Try this: Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Go to Here for your reference. 1. Download Combo fix from one of these locations. * IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe 2. Click start > run and Copy and Paste this in exactly, using the picture below for reference, then click OK. 3. Combo will begin to run DO NOTHING while this is happening. • It will kill a few processes and disconnect you from the internet. • If by chance it stops prematurely you can re-establish your internet connection by restarting your computer. • This needs to be done so the program can work most efficiently for you. Do not attempt to use the internet or anything else while it's doing its job for you. **Understand that things like your system clock changing and your desktop disappearing might happen. Do not worry, because all will be restored later. If when it's completed you can not get on the internet just reboot the computer Post the log from comboFix for me located in c:\comboFix.txt 2oG
I can't get ComboFix to start. I've got the .exe file on the desktop and have triple checked the "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall" command. It's just like trying to start HijackThis - the hourglass shows for a split-second, then nothing. Is there anything else I can try, or is it time to re-reinstall XP?
You have a very bad infection that is not showing up in the HJT Log.. I have given you instructions that should have worked if you ran them as instructed. You said that you had re-installed Win XP, if you really did, it should have cleared the problem.. I cannot see your computer without some kind of Log other that HJT so, my only suggestion from here is to completely reformat and reinstall XP, then watch what you download to go back on it…… May the force be with you.. 2oG
Varnull posted in a thread last week about some trojan thingy that could hide itself in disc free space,so if you reinstall windows it would still be there & continue to reinfect, pretty serious if hijack can't find whatever the virus thingy is @luberjz use another comp & download the SP3 iso & burn to rom & intall after the reformatt & xp is reinstalled & why are you still on IE6 ?? it's time to upgrade to IE7 at the minimum,it's far superior & while your at it go get IE7Pro it's a great little plugin,if you use all in one sidebar for ff then IE7Pro is just as handy tho not the same ok you obviously don't update xp otherwise you'd have IE8 installed by now,if you have auto update turned off you need to get in the habit of using windows update icon in the start menu & once page is loaded select the custom button, install all security updates then select the optonal software & hardware updates freebie must haves antivirus: avira clamwin avg avast firewall:-considering what's happened to you Comodo Realtime spyware scanners spywareterminater-my preference SUPERAntiSpyware -2old's preference hahaha Ok the firewall & realtime spyware apps are a must nothing can install without you knowing about it with these in your system, finally if you decide to go with spyterm set updates to download from the source rather than peer2eer & make sure HIP's is enabled
My thoughts exactly - : ) If you do a Complete re-format, and NOT just a Quick to save time, it will take care of anything in free space… Who pumped you full of that Crap, scorp???? LAMO 2oG
lol Edit: the reinstall then reinfection by whatever varnull referred to was only if you didn't reformat
Ccleaner has the advanced option to wipe free space… Depending on free space size, computer speed, etc. etc. it took me 33 minutes to wipe 120GB of free space in a 2GH Celeron running Windows7. 2oG

jb082278, Your Log doesn’t show any infection… You do have some programs running that are not necessary to run all the time.. Check this out: http://www.malwareremoval.com/tutorials/runningslowly.php 2oG
You can use ccleaner to remove startup entries, you hit the tools button then look for the startup button here's some crap in your log that can be removed from startup or perhaps set to not run at start if it has a preferences list 1- -QTTask.exe" -atboottime you'll see it in the task manager as well 2-HPWuSchd2.exe-hp updater it can be removed from startup 3-NMIndexingService.exe-Can't be removed has to be turned off tho it will normally run when comp is idle, however it's a useless tool Ok there's heaps that could be gone from startup including printers etc since they can be activated by desktop shortcut, anyway this free app will tell you whats what in the task manager & whether it can be shutoff Hey 2oldgeek you might find this useful for others to use when helping em out on what to shutdown or what could be causing an issue,it attaches itself to the task manager & puts an icon next to each process, clik on the icon opens a web page with a description of what that process is & who made it,certified by microsoft http://www.processlibrary.com/quicklink/ http://www.ccleaner.com/download Taskmanager jgs.exe = java start-can be shutdown hpsydrv=hp auto update-remove it if poss or shutdown
When dealing with Newbies, one must use the KISS Theory until it is determined that they are not really a newbie and desire to learn more than just Basic Computer Literacy. Newbies do not desire to learn what makes a computer tick, they just want it fixed as soon and as simple as possible. The link that I gave will defrag, delete unused programs, turn off the indexing service and stop most un-necessary startup programs using startuplite… more than enough without trying to educate them to the geek side of computing… Thought for the day: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it… : ) 2oG
