I have 2 drives on my PC. MY primary c drive is 20gb and second hd d is 60gb. reformatted my c drive and loaded windows xp. trouble my second drive is not showing in explorer. I have no idea how to get this to come up. any help appreciated. Also my graphics card is nvidia vanta. I know nothing about graphics cards and a mate said i should remember and load up the drivers for it. I can't find any disk - what should I do here?? Thanks for any replies
Ok.. First thing, the 2nd Harddrive, is there anything on this drive ? Does it show up in the BIOS? Is this a new drive, or just an old drive. Did you have data on there ? If it shows up in the BIOS, and its a newdrive or a old drive with no data on it, Eaisest way is to format this. WARNING: This will delete everything on the HardDrive you select. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management. Now down on the left hand side under Storage you should see Disk Management. Click on that. Now on the bottom right hand side you should see both hard drives. It will be broken up into 2 Sections eg -------------------------------- |Disc 0| Useage etc here | |Basic | | |Size | | |Online| | -------------------------------- MAKE SURE YOU SELECT THE CORRECT DRIVE OR YOU COULD LOOSE INFORMATION ON YOUR CURRENT DRIVE. On the Second Hard it should say 60G. If it has offline next to it: You have to click on the first section where it will have Disc 1 and then Right-Click and go Inailize. It should now say online. Now click on the 2nd part of the line, and right click. Now go Format. Go through the opinions, it will say NTFS, Volume Name etc. That will take a little while to format, so better to just leave the Comptuer alone while it is doing that. Hi Cozza, Thanks for your help. When you say BIOS what does that mean? Went to the Disk Mgt under Comp Mgt and it only shows my C: drive. It shows disc 0 as my C drive right enough. Under that is drive 1 which has dynamic and foreign written underneath. it also shows a yellow triangle warning sign? when i right click this square/icon i get the options convert to basic disk properties help can't see any initilize option and it does not show the capacity there or under the properties box. to answer an earlier question before i reformatted my c drive i wiped all movie/mp3 files off the 60gb d drive but when right clicking to reformat it in explorer it said there was still running problems? as far as i know it's empty as nothing was showing in explorer on the disc and had checked show hidden files. hope that explains things a bit more. would appreciate if you get the chance to drop me a line back.
BIOS - Basic Input Output System This tells the hardware in ur comptuer what to do basically. It is showing up in Disk Management, so no need to worry about that. So there is nothing on the 60G harddrive that you want to format. Select the Properties. What does it say in there.? On the right hand side box of Disk 1 (the drive you want to format) If you right click in there, does it give you any options? Regards CoZZa
ok firstly when i right click in the right hand box of disk 01 no options come up. under properties the first tab shows the name of the disk (maxtor) a ref no and a report that the device is working properly which is wierd cause on the volume tab it shows capacity as 0 Mb ? Device usage on the general tab is shown as enabled. You asked there is nothing on the 60 gb drive that I want to format. I had a few fragmented files and the drive was not fragmenting properly (my fault due to not doing it often enough). i deleted everything on it and a mate advised to reformat it would be the best option. since win xp is not recognising it i cannot do it so it's basically blank and still in working order. also ran check or scan disk which reported no errors. not sure what else i can do? thx again
Hey Ok, in Disk Management, up the top you should see HDD(C HDD(D (HDD being the label of the Hard Drive) Click on D: which should be the 60G. Now right click on it. You should see the options Open, Explore....Format....Properties Select Format and follow the prompts to format. Did this work ? Regards CoZZa
hi, up at the top in disk management it is only showing the c 20 Gb primary drive. a mate was trying to do something in safe mode (when you press delete during boot up. still didn't work but he wasn't too sure he was doing the right thing. should it be done that way? thx
user fdisk is dos mode and see if the HD is showing up there. If it is, remove the partition and create a new one and then reformat the hard drive.
Right click my computer click on manage click on diskmanagment right click on the secondary drive (if it shows up) click on format...This worked for me hopefully it will for you also.... Good luck!!
Hello. I have a very similar problem. I have 3 HD's. 20GB=O/S, 60GB=program files, 200GB=Audio & Video. I formatted XP on the 20GB. This is where I need some help. All drives are recognised in the BIOS. All drives are recognised in "Device Manager" However; the 200GB drive, does not show up in Windows Exlplorer. Formatting the 200GB drive is not an option for me since there is some very important data on it. Can anyone provide some feedback or ideas to help me solve my dilemma? Thanks.
I tried a couple of different forums and no one could give me advice on how to fix this. Eventually a mate who's been in the IT business for 15 years had a look at it and the only way he fixed it was to set the BIOS to ON for auto detect. HE then had to reformat the drive as something had happened to the way it was formatted. Once this was done XP picked it up in Explorer. I lost some data I wanted to keep but could live with it. Whether this is your only option I don't know. I would see if anyone else helps and maybe try another forum. PC Pitstop is pretty good. Cheers
