OK, so my computer was working perfect until I installed DAEMON TOOLS. Then I noticed that when I plugged in my thumb drive, windows said it was an Unsupported USB Device. My printer does not work, my thumb drive does not work, my USB Blue tooth does not work. The only things that work are my USB Mouse and Keyboard. I tried to reinstall the drivers that were on my Motherboard CD, but that did not work. I uninstalled ALL USB from my device mananger and thought if I let windows reinstall it might fix it. I am wondering if I delete the INF files for the USB drivers that I could then reinstall SP2 and that might fix it. I am looking for any help with this.

    Thanks,
    Jay

I would try a system restore point prior to your usb problems. I could be wrong but I can’t see how daemon tools would have anything to do with usb. If that doesn’t work forget about the thumb drive and see if your printer communicates with xp. Turn the printer off and turn back on again. Check the cable and is the usb connection loose. If you can get your printer working than the memory of the thumb drive could be corrupt.

I don’t know how many usb ports you have on your pc. Is it four or more or are you using a hub? If your usb mouse and keyboard are working than I can’t see a software conflicting issue (daemon tools) but then again I could be wrong.

I also don’t understand where the sp2 comes into play in this. When did you install sp2? Prior to your problems or after. Also are you talking about deleting your motherboard inf usb drivers or Microsoft’s generic. How many different usb inf files do you have while trying to update in device manager?

I would make sure and check usb connections (switching them around) first. Hope you have some luck.

Yes, I tried the system restore point. It was working fine until I installed DAEMON tools. I know that it was DAEMON tools because that program creates vitural driver and drivers so it messes with a lot of things, just never seen it do this before.

It seems to be anything that is a USB mass stoage device. My printer has a 8 in 1 media reader on it so Windows sees that as a mass stoage device. All devices work in another computer. I even uninstalled all USB devices, went into the INF folder and pulled out the drivers for all USB and reinstalled SP2 and that did not work. I tried the drivers that came with my motherboard, but it says that SP2 has the updated drivers that I would need.

SP2 comes into play because SP2 is where USB 2.0 became a standard windows driver.

My computer has 6 USB ports on it, no hub.

Not that I do not appreciate the help, but I have been in the IT industrie for 10 years as part of helpdesks and what not. This is something I have never seen before. I have tried all the basics, I am just trying to see if there is anything advanced that I have not done to keep me from formating my system.

If Daemon tools is the culprit with your usb, make sure when you uninstall Daemon tools that you go into c:\windows\system32\drivers and delete these files.
sptd.sys and sptd7021.sys. Also sptd.sys generates random four digits to sptd.sys#### so you probably don’t have the 7021.sys but another four digits. These files did not get uninstalled like they should have and are running in memory.

Reboot after you delete these files. Check the registry to make sure it is gone. It is in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SPTD. Also check HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_SPTDIf they are still in the registry right click and change permissions from administrator group to full access. (SPTD is protected)

This may solve your problem. I also want to add that I always try the basics first, for that is often the most overlooked and much time can be wasted. I just didn’t realize that you were experienced by your first post. Good luck and I hope you don’t have to format.
