Hi all, I just formatted my HDD two days ago and most everything has been running good (I have SP2 and everything updated)--except for "explorer.exe". Randomly, explorer.exe will use 100% CPU usage until I either manually end the task and restart it or until I restart my PC. It happens when I browse the internet, watch movies, browse through files on my computer... anytime. It usually happens every 20-30 minutes or so. I have looked up this problem on google and there seems to be quite a few people with this problem, but I cannot seem to get it fixed. It's getting pretty annoying especially since I just formatted. :\ BTW, I ran hijackthis (seems like most people ask for this). Hi! Iv found that with all xp os's Iv had that same problem, [bold]especially[/bold] with sp2. Not sure what the cause is but to fix it is easy for me. I simply "end [bold]process[/bold]" ("[bold]not[/bold] task") to all instances of explorer and clik on file - run, then when the run dialog pops up, type: explorer and hit enter. Then my start menu and desktop come back. If thats not good enough for you, you could try servant salamander, a [bold]very[/bold] good alternative to windows explorer. Or you could try using windows with service pack 1, not 2, as I have found that sp1 is [bold]much[/bold] faster and stable and has that problem less frequently. SP2 sucks btw, and I have tried and tested and endured no sp, ssp1, and sp2.
I check further, but microsoft has a download called uphclean. It releases processes and makes them behave. It will be at www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en, but last time I searched for it couldn't find it. Had to go throught help and support and let the computer find it. I'll edit in anything I find. EDIT>If this doesn't fix this there are other fixes. Thanks for the replies. I should have mentioned this earlier but I've tried most of the things that MS has on their site and on other forums--and none of them seem to work. I have tried what you guys mentioned (the end task gets annoying because explorer goes crazy again within a few minutes most of the time). Any other ideas?
I had the same problem turned out it was my ram causing the trouble , try a memtest (google ) and see if it is that
