I am trying to re-load Windows XP onto a DELL Inspiron 1300 laptop using the Reinstallation disk provided by DELL. When I try to complete the installation of XP I get a messgae that the install has failed as ACCESS IS DENIED. Can someone help as I don't know how to get around the problem. I would really like to reformat the hard drive and do the re-installaion from scratch but I can't get the DOS prompt up in Safe Mode because XP has not been loaded. Can soemone provide some help please. thanks Greg, Canberra, Australia

Just download a Gparted live cd, and then format the hdd with that, you may want to download an Ubuntu live cd and try and save what you can with that via an ext hdd (You may even like what you see and decide to install Ubuntu instead :)... up to you...

Well quite honestly, I'd just install XP from the Windows XP disc, then download device drivers. But something has obviously cheezed your comp.

Insert your disc, when going through the process DELETE THE EXIST PARTITION!! If you did do that, and it still doesn't work, try this.

Insert the original Windows XP disc, install it, then reinstall over it with your Dell disc. But personally I'd just stick with the base copy of XP

Thank you very much for the advice. I will do as you suggest over the next few days. Greg
