Hey boys it's been awhile! I got a strange problem with the pavilion I so dearly hate with a burning passion now. I decided to upgrade from 98 to XP finally, just cause I'm using it more for just checkin facebook while I do my gaming on the consoles in my room. I have a paid for version of XP non pirated and what not, came with a serial that worked flawless last time I tried it but I've upgraded all the computers using it to windows 7 and put everything away. The CD that came with it was wrecked destroyed, so I ended up downloading an ISO via torrents that had non of those pirated crap on it, just a simple ISO copy of a cd I had. I burned it, it worked properly and installed, yet my serial suddenly didn't work. Than I realized I had Pro Service pack 2.. So does that mean my serial will only work with the CD of Windows XP Service Pack 2 PRO or what? Like I typed it in correctly there's no reason for it not to work unless I need the service pack 2 version..
The serial number is keyed to the disc version that it came with. If you bought a 1-2CPU version of XP Pro SP0, the key will only work with that image. If you download enough .isos you might get lucky and find the right one. AFAIK, there are at least 10-15 different versions out there.
the key should work on any xp version. the reason why many keys do not work is because we like to share it with others!! that's the reason why windows came up with WGA -.- i've been running win xp sp2, win xp sp3, win xp pro sp3 using the same key and the updates work just fine...a suggestion, if you are using the updates, try not to install updates for WMediaPlayer or WGA, it's not worth the headache...i have genuine keys for all my windows service packs, and it's not fun seeing the 'u may be a victim of fraud' anymore.
"the key should work on any xp version." WRONG!!!! The 1-2 CPU license key will not work with VLK images. The SP1a license keys will not work with an SP0 or SP2 image. I know this for a fact. Keys will always work when the OS is upgraded "in place". TC is talking about installing from a different CD than the one that they key is associated with. Ex. If you bought a laptop with a license key for the XP Home sp1CD that it was shipped with, you cannot install from ANY OTHER CD and have the license key work. If you try to install from an XP Home SP0 install disc, the license key verification will fail.
TC is talking about installing from a different CD than the one that they key is associated with. but the thing is, i've installed windows on others system using iso images downloaded from the net using the same key that is associate with my cd, and till now the only problem they've had is with the wga notices.
Well I managed to get lucky and find an ISO that worked with my serial! Yay, and it passed WGA so I don't get any stupid fraud messages or anything of the sort, fully updated, fully working. I wish I could put Windows 7 on that POS upstairs... But oh well, I got this computer for 7! Thanks for the help guys! (CASE CLOSED! LOL!)
