    Last night my laptop starting acting funny, it became really slow when I was using it. It was so slow I couldn't even shut it down or restart it so I pulled off the plugs and let the battery drain itself out. This morning I turned on my laptop and it won't get pass the windows XP screen. This is the error I'm getting:
    STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
    The registry cannot load the hive {file}:
    \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
    or its log or alternate.
    It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete.
    Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

    Can anyone help me? I don't have the system restore disc or Windows XP disc either. The last thing I downloaded and installed was DivX software.

    I did a web search to see if I could find a similar problem, I did find something similar and the directions to fix it. Since you don't have the xp installation cd, you will need to get a Linux live cd that can read and write to NTFS hard drives.
