When i'm extracting large files (2GB+) Winrar only uses half of my CPU. Sometimes even lower. I've tried 7-zip and that has the problem. I'm not using any AV atm. and my PC specs are as followed: HP Dv3-2140eo Entertainment - Harddrive: Samsung HM320JI - Proccesor: Intel Pentium T4200 (1M Cache, 2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB) - Ram: 4GB DDR2 SDRAM - OS: Windows 7 So what am i doing wrong?
This is true. but you might be able to speed it up some. press ctrl alt del and if using 7, vista, or xp, click task manager. once you click that, right click on the winrar instance in the list. click go to process. the process will be highlited. right click on the process and change the priority to high
Harddrive speed is also a big factor. HD is always the bottleneck when there's a program which needs to write or read data occasionally. If you go with ssd drive, you might experience much faster extracting/compressing processes. Winrar isn't able to take the full potential of your processor because of this. Very funny, although that won't work.
Did you remember to check the "multitreading" box in WinRAR's settings as well as remember to uncheck the "Low priority" box? If you have done both of those then, as far as I know, WinRAR will use the most CPU it's capable of. Make sure you have an up-to-date version of WinRAR as well; the current version is 3.93.
