I have a wireless network for my laptop. For some reason it stopped working. I have an IP adress and Subnet Mask but no Default Gateway. I've tried unplugging the wireless router and the DSL modem, but no luck. My Laptop says that the signal strength is excellent, so I don't know what the problem is. Can someone please Help!!!!!
IF your ISP requires you to have a static IP then you must have the gateway as well! The gateway is the address to your service provider if you dont have that you arent going to get to the internet. Do you have another machine hooked up to the net? If so you can get the gateway from it.. Go to your command prompt and type in "ipconfig" without the "'s and hit enter. Your gateway will be listed there.. Hope that helps you out
Well, your laptop is 'talking' to your router. The IP address that your router is set to is the gateway IP you require. Your router/modem is the device that obtains an IP address from your ISP (this is not your gateway.) The gateway is the IP from which you talk through - your router. Most ISP offer dynamic IP's and assign upon request, unless you have paid for a static one (which costs alot more) In your manual for your router/modem, there should be a default IP address already assigned to it, depending on make and model, eg 192.168.0.1 (unless you manually set it up yourself, you may have chosen a different IP for it.) That IP should be used as your gateway, and also DNS.......... Your gateway IP is the IP address that you are using to communicate to the outside world - ie the routers IP address you assign it either static or dynamic for your LAN Let us know how you get on.....................?
